Netgear has dabbled in the smart home in a variety of ways over the years. However, the company is ready to enter a whole new space: home security.

The company just debuted the Arlo Smart Home Security Camera, a new self-monitoring option that’s 100-percent wireless.

The Arlo works with your home’s existing Wi-Fi system to deliver clear, 720p video from just about every angle, both inside and outdoors. Yes, the Arlo is even ready to live outside, and has night vision for use around the clock. Other features include a 130-degree field of view, motion sensors, and more.

It’s important to note that the Arlo is completely wireless, which means that it doesn’t even need a power cord. Instead, it’s battery-operated, which boasts about six months of security (depending on usage), all without needing a nearby outlet. Adding to the convenience, the Arlo is about the size of a bar of soap, so it can be installed almost anywhere.

According to Netgear, Arlo offers real-time notifications via email and the free Arlo app for iOS and Android devices. That same app allows users to watch live or recorded video, check out motion-event recordings, customize alerts, and arm/disarm motion-sensors. One app can display as many as four cameras at once. Users can also check out cameras through a browser on any Mac or PC.

To get started, users will need to purchase the Arlo Smart Home Security Camera Kit. This includes two HD outdoor cameras, the smart home base station, four magnetic dome mounts for securing each camera and 200MB of free cloud storage. Netgear says that the base station “can also ‘talk’ to other connected devices”—and plans to put deliver those options sometime next year. As a little preview, the company says it has partnered with IoT device manufacturers, such as LiFX, for future integration of LiFX light bulbs.

Netgear will start selling the Arlo Smart Home Security Kit (VMS3230) sometime in January 2015 for $349.99. Additional cameras (VMC3030) will also be sold separately for $169.99 each.
