Screen Innovations (SI) has a new heavy-duty projection screen coming to market, combining its proprietary dual-sided 360 optic with the KAOS Onyx Retention System. The new product, being called the KAOS 360 Rear-Pro Projection Screen, aims to be one of the most durable (and flexible) outdoor projection screens in the industry.
“We put the 360 optic outdoors years ago and our dealers loved it but there was one major problem, even a stiff breeze would move the screen so much you had distortion and loss of image focus,” said Ryan Gustafson, Founder and CEO of Screen Innovations.
“Since that day we have been trying to find a way to solve this problem to allow the ultimate big screen experience outdoors again, KAOS is exactly that giving dealers the ultimate flexibility in seating location and projector placement!”
A Look at the Two Technologies at Play in the KAOS 360 Rear-Pro Projection Screen
Originally developed as an outdoor shading solution meant to stand up to some of the toughest wind conditions, KAOS (and its accompanying Onyx Retention System) is designed to keep the screen surface exceptionally flat, even in windy conditions. The system is also capable of supporting screen sizes up to 24 feet wide that can then be retracted into either a surface mounted box or recessed pocket cassette.
SI’s 360° optic, meanwhile, allows the projector to produce bright, uniform, hot-spot-free images on both sides of the screen across a 160-degree viewing cone. What this means is that guests can view the projected image essentially from anywhere, allowing for greater flexibility in projector placement.
Why Integrators Should Take Note
This isn’t the first time Screen Innovations has paired its 360° optic with one of its screens (the first being the Solo 3). However, it now being paired with KAOS, a solution that had previously been reserved for outdoor shading under the Shade Innovations brand, introduces a high-performance, high-durability element into the equation.
As mentioned by Gustafson, rear projection demands an exceptionally flat screen surface to maintain focus and image integrity, and even moderate breezes could compromise the viewing experience.
While KAOS introduces a level of consistency and quality to the viewing experience overall, it also provides a level of insurance to its high wind resistance, especially in areas that are prone to severe storms.
