Focal has a brand-new loudspeaker based off its Scala Utopia Evo 3-way floorstanding speaker: the Scala Utopia Evo M. As described by Focal, the speaker retains the 3-way architecture that made the original Scala Utopia a success while incorporating two key technologies: the PRISM tweeter and the M-profile W midrange, both borrowing tried-and-tested innovations from Focal’s premium offerings.
What’s new with the Scala Utopia Evo M
As stated previously, the Scala Utopia Evo M adopts the M-profile midrange from the Utopia Main professional range, combining a 5-inch ‘W’ cone with sandwich structure and a one-piece M-profile geometry. As a follow-up, it’s then paired TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) suspension to limit cone deformation and reduce distortion. The result, according to Focal provides an ultra-linear frequency response with a midrange register that is also said to more transparent, precise and natural.
The PRISM tweeter, meanwhile, hails from the Diva Alta Utopia (a touch up of the original Diva Utopia) and reportedly achieves a higher level of rigidity than beryllium. Coupled with Focal’s IAL2 (Infinite Acoustic Loading) technology, the company says it delivers treble reproduction of “unprecedented purity, finesse and extension,” achieving a bandwidth of up to 40kHz. That’s then backed up by a redesigned 11-inch W woofer with dual-ferrite motor to deliver powerful, deep, controlled bass.
To these features, Focal added OPC+ (Optimum Phase Crossover), allowing precise adjustment of bass and treble (within a single decibel) to suit the listening environment, as well as Gamma and Focus Time technologies, for temporal consistency and mechanical stability.
Design and finishes
The Scala Utopia Evo M continues Focal’s tradition of French design with a handcrafted wooden cabinet and sculptural look. Available in lacquer or wood finishes, the speaker strikes a subtle balance between sophistication, modernity and discretion.
Why integrators should take note
As an evolution of the original Scala Utopia Evo speaker, the Evo M is an amalgamation of what Focal considers to be tried-and-tested technologies within its product stack, with perhaps the most noteworthy crossover coming from the M-profile midrange, something normally reserved for use in Focal’s professional studio monitors. In Focal’s own words, the Evo M has been designed to work as the heart of a complete hi-fi system and the company pulling in technology from higher-tier systems seems to confirm that intent.
