Nest’s Big Announcement: Audio? Voice Control? Doorbell Cam?
Nest has a press conference June 17, and industry analyst Michael Wolf speculates about potential announcements, including a doorbell camera and voice control a la Amazon Echo.
What will Google’s Nest announce at its June 17 press conference in San Francisco? I was going to speculate, but industry analyst and friend Michael Wolf beat me to it, with an analysis much better than I could provide.
Here are some highlights from his latest article:
Audio: Music and Voice Control
I do think Google’s going to do something here, either by adding more features around voice control to existing products or doing a mashup device like the Amazon Echo that has voice control as a key feature.
Camera as Security Hub
Dropcam disappointingly dropped a cool new set of features for light-security when it got acquired by Nest, and Nest told me they were evaluating the Dropcam roadmap. Well, now I think we’ll see if they morph the Dropcam into more of a full-featured light security device a la the Canary or not.
This is JJ talking: In my opinion, Nest has gotten nothing out of its $555 million acquisition of this IP camera company. They need to do something to get their money’s worth on that one.
They mentioned use of a smart doorbell in a patent filing about home security, so they might be getting into home security in a bigger way.
Michael reminds us that Nest is recruiting audio engineers, so a Sonos-type product could be in the offing.
I agree with all of Michael’s speculations and have little to add except for various environmental sensors that would be placed around the home. We might also hear something tangible about Thread—a network-layer IoT protocol that Nest is behind.
