Porn Industry Warms Up to Blu-ray

Leading video producer Digital Playground to ship first XXX title in Blu-ray format, after year-long success with HD DVD.

More High-Tech XXX

Digital Playground continues to set the tech trends in the adult video arena. The company pioneered "interactive sex" for computer CDs ages ago, so you might expect great things in the ultra-interactive environment of high-def DVDs.

“Nobody’s doing as much interactivity as we are, even on regular [non-XXX] DVDs,” Joone says. “We have our own team in-house that does HD DVD authoring. We spend good R&D time developing techniques.”

He says the development of interactive content has been a little more challenging with the Blu-ray format. “A lot of advanced features are only supported in newer players. Until yesterday (Dec. 18), not even the PS3 supported Java, which is what most people are using to try to create interactivity.”

Even more interactivity is in the works from Digital Playground. “It’s just a matter of the manufacturer stabilizing the platform.”

Meanwhile, the production company is “moving on all fronts” to distribute its content to every device with a screen. It was, for example, the first company to create porn for the iPhone, but you can watch Digital Playground fare on virtually any cellphone.

Joone says that mobile porn is available in about 38 countries where “you’re just two clicks away on the handset.”

He adds, “In the U.S. it’s a little different because of regulations.”

I hate that.

I guess this means I will be looking more closely at Blu-ray.

It means EVERYONE will be looking more closely at Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray has been digging HD DVD’s grave for a year now by constantly outselling them, but this seriously could be the first nail in HD DVD’s coffin.

The person quoted is incorrect regarding interactivity - the PS3, as do all Blu-ray players, fully supports Java.  What just became available on the PS3 is Profile 1.1 (Bonus View) support, which adds support for secondary audio and video.  Java-based interactivity doesn’t require this and works on all players.

With talks of the major studios dropping exclusive HD-DVD use, I don’t think it will be long before we see more blu-ray porn DVDs. Regardless of what physical media the adult industry decides to go with, the real threat to blu-ray and hd-dvd is the Internet. Sometime in the next decade we will all be downloading our high definition content from the web.
