Sharp Electronics has been pretty quiet about Ultra HD (4K) so far. Now, the company is making a big splash with its very first Ultra HD TV - the 70-inch Aquos Ultra HD LED TV.

Also known as the LC-70UD1U, this LED has four times the pixel resolution (3840-by-2160) of a full 1080p HDTV. The dual-core processor can upscale images from movies, TV, games, and even YouTube. Also worth noting is that this set comes packing the coveted THX 4K certification, which means that it comes with pre-calibrated THX Movie viewing modes.

Sharp even promises audio to match the image. The set has a six-speaker sound system, which includes separate mid-range and tweeters. It also packs in Sharp’s own DuoBass dual subwoofer system for 35 watts of dialogue, action, music, and more.

The set has plenty of other sought-after features, including 3D and built-in WiFi. Sharp is using passive 3D for this TV. However, because of the resolution, you should still get a 1080p image to each eye. To test out the features, Sharp is including two pairs of Bluetooth 3D glasses inside the box.

That WiFi will come in handy for tapping into Sharp’s SmartCentral Smart TV Platform. This includes on-screen access to web-based services, such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, YouTube, Facebook, Skype, Pandora, and more. It also has a built-in Flash-enabled web browser, as well as split-screen options for surfing the web and watching TV at the same time.

Other features include a Wallpaper Mode, four HDMI inputs, a built-in SD-card reader, and two USB ports. The LC-70UD1U is also compatible with Sharp’s Remote Control and Beam apps.

Look for the Aquos Ultra HD LED TV to ship in mid-August. Sharp has listed the TV with an MSRP of $7,999.99.
