Matsushita Electric Officially Changes Name to Panasonic
Japanese parent decides to unify brand name under Panasonic.
Finally, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (NYSE symbol: MC) is dropping its corporate name in favor of its best-known brand: Panasonic.
Effective October 1, 2008, it will officially be known as "Panasonic Corporation" across the world.
I don't know whom I have to thank over in Japan, but I need to thank someone. I never could pronounce "Matsushita" correctly. I can't count how many times over the past 20 years I heard myself, corporate execs from Panasonic in New Jersey and others totally butcher the pronunciation of Matsushita.
I heard "maa-shush-ta," "Mat-su-shee-ta" and even "Maat-shoosh-ta." To this day, I am not sure which one is correct. It is simply a very hard name for English speakers to pronounce.
The change, that was approved at the company's board meeting on January 10, will be submitted for and subject to approval at its ordinary general meeting of shareholders to be held in late June this year.
The Osaka-based, $77 billion company will also be dropping the "National" brand name it uses for appliances and housing equipment by fiscal 2010.
The company has been using a company name "Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd." since 1935, following its earlier names "Matsushita Electric Manufacturing Works" since 1929 and "Matsushita Electric Housewares Manufacturing Works" beginning 1918, when it was first established.

This is just as wise a move as when back around 2001 or 2002 that Matsushita retired the “Technics” brand from home audio. At the time, Matsushita chose to pursue a low end, entry level and “Home Theatre in a Box”, and did not want to ruin the Technics name. I thought that was a great idea.
