2012 could someday be remembered as a year of tremendous technological advancements. Today, it's just another year gone by without the Super Bowl in 3D. How can the world's biggest television event not be a showcase for 3D, which is still trying to gain acceptance among the public? Here is my analysis. Broadcasters have given up on 3D: Fox, NBC, CBS and even Disney-owned ABC and ESPN have concluded that 3D is for watching Blu-ray movies in home theaters, not television programming. No demand for 3D: There isn't even an… View this story

Netflix 3D Streaming
Rachel Cericola | 01/31 09:55 AM, 7 Comments
The rumor that Netflix will offer 3D streaming is certainly nothing new. But CEO Reed Hastings is fueling the fire, saying Netflix is indeed working on a little something for its 3D-capable subscribers. In a conference call last week, Hastings said (via GigaOM) Netflix is renting 3D Blu-rays. He couldn’t comment on the popularity of that offering, only saying that disc rentals were down overall. “On streaming, that is definitely something we can do and we will be looking at,” Hastings said. You probably shouldn’t hold your breath. After all,… View this story

Panasonic E50 Series LED TVs
Grant Clauser | 01/12 02:49 PM, 0 Comments
While known primarily for its plasma TVs among video enthusiasts, Panasonic launched a line of 3D LED LCD TVs with passive 3D technology at CES 2012. A Panasonic rep said the company wants to give consumers a wider choice of options. Panasonic wants customers to know that the best picture quality will come from the active-shutter glasses plasma TVs, but if the convenience of cheap polarized glasses appeals to people, Panasonic will give them that on the ET5 series LED TVs. Panasonic also introduced a 55-inch LED, beating out its… View this story

At CES 2012, XpanD is introducing a fully automated "3D Ecosystem" that automatically detects whether a viewer is wearing 3D glasses and configures their display device for 3D operation. The 3D Ecosystem works in conjunction with XpanD’s 3D Electronic Eyewear and a compatible display device such as a TV, projector or computer. Other active and passive 3D systems require the viewer to manually switch the TV (or computer or projector) from 3D to 2D operation whenever they want to watch in 3D or 2D. With the XpanD 3D Ecosystem, the… View this story

Grant Clauser | 01/09 08:40 AM, 1 Comment
Toshiba treated us to a special preview of its autostereoscopic (glasses-free) 3D TV prior to the opening of CES 2012. Not all details were complete, but the US delivery of this breakthrough TV is getting closer. The 55-inch TV uses a 4K x 2K LED LCD panel. For regular 2D viewing, all content is upscaled to 4K. For 3D, the glasses-free experience is delivered at 720p for up to nine viewers. Each of the nine viewers needs to be seated in specific “sweet spot” locations, but a face tracking system… View this story

It also brings together the tide of 3D and connectivity feature-sets populating just about every new TV out there.
