Grant Clauser | 04/26 11:22 AM,

There are some home electronics projects that get planned out in detail weeks ahead of time, where all the equipment is ordered, the installers scheduled, and the final unveil happens in a flourish. There are also the ones that follow a different evolutionary path. The audio, video and control renovations of this 18th century log and stone farmhouse falls mostly into the latter category, much like the evolution of the house itself. The center of the house in the property now called Shaggy Bark (named after a type of tree…

A week after introducing the Offsite Programming tool for its MRX-10 Advanced Network Controller, URC is updating its Total Control Mobile App, which can be downloaded free from iTunes. The new Remote Access feature allows clients to control their system from any location with an Internet connection via an iPad, iPhone, or iPod. Click through the photo gallery for screen shots of the Total Control iPhone interface. URC says implementation requires a one-time set-up and handshake with the client’s URC MRX-10. Modern SoHo Loft Blends Design & Tech
Grant Clauser | 03/01 10:33 AM,
0 Comments
If some of your potential clients think electronics can clutter up a home and distract from the core aesthetics, show them this tastefully-designed loft in New York City’s fashionable SoHo district. In this modern space, Cliqk integrated a lighting, control and audio/video system that is seen and heard only when it’s needed. The owners of this loft insisted on simplicity, both in how the system operated and how it merged with the space’s design. Going for a minimalist theme, however, doesn’t mean the technology is lacking in any way. On…

Sanus Highlights TV Safety at CES 2013: No More Tip-overs
Julie Jacobson | 01/14 08:36 AM,
2 Comments
Sanus introduced a nifty iPad mount and some nice furniture at CES 2013 (see related slideshow), but the overarching theme for the company was safety – keeping TVs from toppling over. Every three weeks, the company notes, a child is killed from a tipping TV. To that end, Sanus has launched tvsafety.org to educate parents about the dangers of poorly mounted TVs, and inform them about measures to mitigate accidents. For example, Sanus advises buyers – even those without children – to look for the UL mark on products and…

Why Dedicated Control Interfaces Are Still Superior to Mobile Devices
Joe Lautner | 12/17 09:37 AM,
12 Comments
The incredible market success of the iPhone and iPad, along with other smartphones and tablets, has transformed the way homeowners look at control systems. Suddenly, something that used to be a foreign concept is as simple as operating a device the average consumer uses every day. This culture shift has, undoubtedly, created new opportunities for systems integrators and sped the growth of the home automation market. But this familiarity has led some clients to think smartphones and tablets are all they need, and it’s vital to our industry that we…

Vantage Automation Helps Paralyzed Homeowner
Lisa Montgomery | 12/05 10:04 AM,

Convenience. Safety. Comfort. These are a few of the your clients choose to have an automation system installed into their homes. For Tate and Jennifer Jarvis of Dripping Springs, Texas, the ability to have the lights, thermostats, and other devices adjust all by themselves was more of a necessity than anything else. Paralyzed from the waist down after an accident three years ago, Tate found himself learning to adapt to life in a wheelchair. His brother, Todd Jarvis of Sterling Home Technologies, Inc., offered to outfit his new 5,500-square-foot home…

Hands On: Meridian Digital Media System
Robert Archer | 11/01 08:20 AM,
0 Comments
When Meridian acquired innovative Sooloos several years ago, its potential impact on the consumer audio market was underestimated. After setting up a Meridian Digital Media System, which entailed the Media Core 200, Audio Core 200, a pair of DSP3200 speakers and matching stands, with the company’s new iPad control app I was able to experience an easy-to-use integrated solution that absolutely kills with sonic and technical sophistication. Installation is, for the most part, simple, even if the directions aren’t great. After I mounted the speakers on their stands, I set…
