D&H Finds Success with Emerging Technologies
While TV sales are doing just fine for the distributor, the company says it benefits from being an early adopter of new technologies.
Despite the slowing economy, D&H Distributing has continues to experience "double-digit growth," says co-president Dan Schwab. "We're up 18 percent this year."
The distributor is "doing very well on the home entertainment side," Schwab says, noting that families may be canceling summer trips but they're not nixing game consoles and big screens. "They'll cut out buying clothes and fancy dinner more quickly than entertainment."
But it's not just run-of-the-mill TVs that D&H is selling. The company has been one of the early adopters in many new product categories.
Schwab believes D&H has an edge because the company brings in emerging technologies "before competing distributors are ready to invest in them."
Notably:
ZeeVee's ZvBox allows users to modulate HDTV content from a home PC (anything that has a VGA port) to remote rooms of the house.
HDHomerun allows users to watch over-the-air digital and unencrypted digital cable TV from all computers in the home network.
Schwab says he isn't "seeing anything that is 'breakthrough' technology like HD DVD and Blu-ray. This year we're just seeing improvements on all those things."
D&H is "doing very well" with single surround-sound speakers like Yamaha's YSP series of multichannel products.
The new Vudu XL video-on-demand box is "doing better than we thought," says Schwab. "It's very obvious to me that downloading is going to be the direction of the future."
Schwab is "pleasantly surprised" by sales of HP's Windows Home Server.
