Kaleidescape has announced the Strato K, a new flagship movie player capable of playing 8K content and introducing a new video format the company calls 4K Cinematic.
According to Kaleidescape, the Strato K is designed to deliver higher-fidelity video playback through increased processing power, enabling support for both native 8K content and a new 4K Cinematic mode that features full chroma reproduction of up to 4:4:4 and higher bitrates than traditional 4K formats.
The company says more than 150 movie titles are currently available in 4K Cinematic through its digital movie store, while licensing discussions for 8K content are ongoing.
New 4K Cinematic Mode Aims to Enhance Image Quality
Kaleidescape says the new 4K Cinematic format leverages the Strato K’s 8K processing capabilities to deliver additional color and image data compared to conventional 4K presentations.
“Kaleidescape’s Strato K is the world’s highest-fidelity movie player,” said Tayloe Stansbury, chairman and CEO of Kaleidescape, in the announcement. “It brings movie lovers closer to the filmmaker’s intent, with cleaner detail, true-to-life color, and a more natural presentation that dramatically improves the viewing experience of any display.”
The company says the format provides higher bitrates and full chroma reproduction, which it believes results in a more immersive viewing experience.
First 8K Association-Certified Movie Player
Kaleidescape says the Strato K is the first movie player to receive certification from the 8K Association, meeting performance and interoperability requirements established by the organization’s Technical Working Group.
“The introduction of Kaleidescape’s new Strato K player is a major milestone for the industry and the latest example of how the 8K ecosystem is continuing to evolve,” said Juan Reyes, executive director of the 8K Association, in the announcement.
According to the company, the player is fully compatible with native 8K content and is designed to support the growing availability of higher-resolution displays and content.
Designed for Standalone or Whole-Home Deployment
The Strato K can operate as a standalone player or as part of a larger Kaleidescape ecosystem. The player includes a 1TB solid-state drive capable of storing a limited number of movies locally and can be paired with Kaleidescape Terra movie servers for expanded storage and whole-home distribution.
Content is delivered through the Kaleidescape Movie Store, which offers movies, TV series and concerts with lossless audio formats, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The company says titles are available in 8K, 4K Cinematic, 4K and 2K formats.
The Strato K will make its public debut June 18 during an event hosted by the SMPTE Hollywood Section and the 8K Association at the Amazon Culver Theater’s 8K screening room.
Kaleidescape says the Strato K is available for pre-order now with an MSRP of $4,995. The company also announced a price reduction for its Strato V player, which now carries an MSRP of $3,995.
