As visitors approach the kitchen a motion detector triggers the door to open (accompanied by a creaky noise, of course). “We timed it so it’s the first person in the group [of visitors] who gets the biggest scare,” Lehman says.

Once in the kitchen a clue leads visitors to pick up the tea kettle and put it into the sink. There’s only one place in the sink where the kettle fits and putting it there triggers the refrigerator to open.

It’s hard to miss that 10-31-76 written on the fridge – even though everything is pitch dark in the exhibit. Visitors are expected to remember that date.
