As homeowners continue to demand larger displays and more flexible entertainment spaces, projector technology is evolving well beyond the traditional dark-room home theater.
During a conversation with CE Pro Executive Editor Zachary Comeau, Epson Senior Product Manager of Home Entertainment Melvin Diaz discussed how consumers are increasingly looking for 150- to 200-inch viewing experiences as 100-inch flat-panel TVs become more commonplace. The shift is creating new opportunities for custom integrators to design entertainment spaces that serve more than just movie night.
Rather than focusing solely on dedicated theaters, many homeowners are investing in multi-purpose media rooms that can handle movies, sports, gaming and everyday television viewing. That evolution is also changing the conversations integrators have with clients, moving beyond screen size to how the room will actually be used throughout the day.
Meeting those expectations requires more than simply scaling up image size. Diaz explained that larger screens place greater demands on brightness, HDR performance, color accuracy, edge-to-edge sharpness and overall image quality. Epson’s latest high-brightness projection platform is designed to preserve those characteristics while making HDR content more impactful than previous generations of home projection.
While ultra-large televisions and residential video walls continue to expand into the premium home entertainment market, Epson sees projection maintaining key advantages, including lower cost per inch, flexible aspect ratios, hidden installations and a more comfortable viewing experience for extended movie sessions.
For integrators, designing these systems requires a holistic approach. In addition to selecting the right projector, factors such as screen material, seating distance, wall colors, ambient lighting, window placement and control system integration all contribute to the final viewing experience. As homeowners continue to embrace flexible living spaces, brighter projection systems are making it possible to deliver theater-scale entertainment without requiring a dedicated cinema room.
