Comcast is looking to pump up its smart home offering with a first-of-its-kind platform for the company dubbed Xfinity Shield. According to Comcast, Shield leverages AI capabilities embedded across its network with Xfinity Gateway technology to make Wi-Fi an always-on layer of cybersecurity, physical and family protection.
Exploring Xfinity’s WiFi Shield
At the heart of Xfinity Shield is WiFi Shield, which introduces three features into Xfinity Wi-Fi: CyberSecure, Wi-Fi Motion and Family Settings.
Starting with CyberSecure, this feature, according to Comcast, works to automatically protect devices connected to the Xfinity Gateway from malware, hackers, phishing attempts and other online threats before they reach devices in the home, doing so by continually assessing threats on the home network, rather than at the device level.
Wi-Fi Motion, as the name might imply, is an opt-in feature that uses Xfinity Gateway and connected devices to detect motion from inside the home using Wi-Fi waves. Xfinity Gateway intelligence then sends instant notifications to customers through the Xfinity app when unexpected activity is detected.
Lastly, Family Settings adds tools that help establish online boundaries and create healthier digital habits for every member of the household. With devices connected through the Gateway, families can create profiles and organize devices by person in the app allowing them to manage screen time, set device limits, pause Wi-Fi and build schedules.
This is included at no additional cost for Xfinity Internet customers.
Shield Select
Comcast is also introducing Shield Select, which combines all of what’s being introduced in WiFi Shield with integrated hardware and enhanced capabilities. Shield Select includes an indoor camera, door/window sensor, cloud video storage capabilities and 24/7 urgent response functionality that allows customers to tap for emergency help.
Shield Select also provides smart motion detection to AI-powered cameras that identifies people, pets, vehicles and package deliveries.
Why Integrators Should Take Note
“Xfinity Shield represents our vision for the next era of the intelligent home,” said Jon Gieselman, Chief Growth Officer, Connectivity & Platforms, Comcast. “We believe the network should do more than connect devices.”
According to Comcast, the average Xfinity customer now connects 36 devices to Wi-Fi, which isn’t too far off from other reports on the matter. This exposes households to greater online risks that manufacturers of devices don’t often provision for.
What’s interesting with Comcast’s approach here, however, is that it’s leveraging an emerging form of physical security (that being Wi-Fi motion detection) to create a hybrid physical/digital security offering that—depending on its success—could become more commonplace as the capabilities evolve.
Availability
Xfinity Shield is available beginning August 18. WiFi Shield is available nationwide for all Xfinity Internet customers with Advanced Xfinity Gateways. Customers can upgrade to Shield Select for $15 per month in the Xfinity app.
Additional capabilities and experiences are stated to follow in 2027.
