Renowned high-end audio manufacturer McIntosh is launching the PS1K Powered Subwoofer, a $35,000 subwoofer designed for audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts featuring deeper and more accurate low frequencies.
According to the Binghamton, N.Y.-based audiophile company, powering the PS1K are two 13-inch drivers featuring McIntosh’s Low Distortion High Performance Magnetic Circuit Design, which aims to reduce distortion and improve power handling.

The PS1K, available later this month, also features Finite Element Analysis for extreme linearity, and the woofers incorporate multi-layer carbon fiber cones for rigidity and sound clarity, resisting flex even at high outputs.
McIntosh says the subwoofer’s dual 13-inch woofers are driven by two 500-watt Class D amplifiers, combining for 1,000 watts of output. The company says this produces tight and clear bass to fill large spaces.
Further, a sealed box design and nearly 1.5-inch thick enclosure baffle eliminate port noise and vibration for a precise and clean bass response.

The PS1K is designed to complement McIntosh speakers (such as last year’s ML1 MKIIs), but it can be added to any high-end system thanks to flexible inputs and outputs that integrate with stereos or home theater systems. With balanced and unbalanced subwoofer connections, adjustable filters, and parametric EQ, it can be fine-tuned to suit individual listening environments and preferences, the company says.
The PS1K also features the company’s Power Guard and Sentry Monitor technologies to protect against overloading and short circuits. Eco-friendly signal sensing and power control technology enhance convenience and power management.
Like many other McIntosh products, the PS1K features high-end finishes, such as a high-gloss black finish, carbon trim and an aluminum base. Glide feet for hard floors and spikes for carpet help ensure stability for any space.
