InfoComm International announces that executive director and CEO Randal Lemke will retire at the end of 2012. This is certainly a blow to those who have known and worked with him for the past 12-plus years in his current position and in the years and decades before his stewardship of InfoComm. The fact there’s a search committee in place underscores the importance of finding the right person to replace Lemke and says InfoComm is taking this process very seriously. Clearly, this is a decision that will shape the future of… View this story

Efficiency and versatility are more than buzzwords these days for installers, they are necessary traits that must be incorporated into today's product market. Middle Atlantic, a New Jersey-based manufacturer of racking systems and accessories has taken these ideals to heart with the introduction of its BGR Series of equipment racks. The company first introduced the line at the recently completed InfoComm commercial electronics trade show and it is now shipping the products. Middle Atlantic says the line can be used for commercial and residential electronics installations, and it says the… View this story

We rarely report about new touchscreens for home control these days. Ever since the iPad came out, it’s hard to find anything particularly interesting about dedicated touchscreens for the residential and commercial markets. We're big fans; it’s just hard to make them sound exciting. But AMX is introducing a real looker at Infocomm 2011: the Modero X Series. These ultra-widescreen touchpanels give us something to talk about. Like, they’re really wide. It may not be rocket science, but you can see how these beauties would be fun in the home,… View this story

Now that CES 2011 is complete, it’s time to think about an event that’s geared specifically for custom electronics professionals: EHX: The CE Pro Event. If you’ve ever attended or thought about attending the event, you already know that there’s lots of educational opportunities with CEDIA, Infocomm, CE Pro and CE Pro’s new sister publication Commercial Integrator available all week long. In addition, there will also be a ton of new products from manufacturers across the custom electronics marketplace. Not to be lost in all this industry stuff is the… View this story

Knowing who to talk to is often half the battle when finding commercial projects, says InfoComm staff instructor Paul Streffon. More than 80 percent of the time, he adds, that person reports to the prospective client's IT department. "A good place to start is to find out who the IT person is," Streffon says. Another good tactic for residential installers is to look for commercial projects through current residential clients. Streffon recommends asking residential clients about their place of business and who is responsible for technology buying decisions. "It stands… View this story

For many years, we have been making the case for increased national exposure for the custom electronics industry via a national campaign ... aka "Got Milk?" There's already federally-passed resolutions for "National Pollinator Week," "National Robotics Week," and even "National Beanpole Week." InfoComm International has taken a step in the right direction. For the fifth year, it is celebrating AV Week, which takes place October 17-23. InfoComm and its members "sponsor workshops, presentations, career fairs and other events around the globe to spotlight the audiovisual industry and to recognize the… View this story

Integrators are well aware of the buzz about digital signage – it’s a huge opportunity, given that it was a nearly $4 billion industry in 2009 and poised to grow to $4.8 billion this year. That opportunity, however, means very little for integration companies that don’t know how to effectively roll out digital signage as an extension of their businesses. To get some guidance, CE Pro turns to an InfoComm Certified Technology Specialist and renowned expert on digital signage Alan Brawn of Brawn Consulting. Brawn has developed an educational module,… View this story

Digital signage is supposed to be a $4.8 billion global industry in 2010 before growing to $8.3 billion in 2013, according to IMS Research. Companies that exhibited at InfoComm 2010 are clearly looking to get in on that. Most booths had digital signage solutions, including displays, software, content distribution and audience evaluation tools. The winner of the NEC Best of InfoComm Award for 2010 is a digital signage player, the HMP100 Hyper Media Player from Swiss digital signage manufacturer SpinetiX. Some other noteworthy digital signage solutions include ones from: AlmoAMXMitsubishiNECOptomaPanasonicSonyX2OZeeVeeClick… View this story

On display at InfoComm 2010 - besides the 925 exhibits - was a convergence of residential and commercial integration. Attendance was up 10 percent to 32,002, making it the second largest InfoComm ever after two years of depleted shows. The surge is a reflection of 80 percent of CE pros doing some commercial work and earning about a quarter of their revenues from commercial projects. With both those figures trending upward, it seems many CE pros made their first trip to the commercial trade show. Visiting InfoComm is a good… View this story

Technically, SurgeX and Chief Manufacturing announced their strategic partnership during InfoComm 2010 in Las Vegas, but they clearly put their heads together beforehand. During the event, SurgeX talked about a bundled solution combining Chief’s line of Raxxess racks protected with SurgeX technology. Plus, two new rear mounted racks to free up space have been co-developed and one was on display in SurgeX’s booth. Shannon Townley, SurgeX’s senior VP of sales demonstrated the solution, showing how the rack’s rear door has integrated power outlets to preserve component space. Statement from Townley… View this story
