The tranquility of a seaside home is unmatched as an escape. Just the sound and views of the ocean itself can be enough to allow someone to let go. The only downside is having to step inside to attend to other matters, though, clearly, the owners of this coastal smart home in La Jolla, California thought the same thing when kitting out their residence in plenty of outdoor and wellness-themed amenities.
Originally designed by the architecture firm Blue Heron, the residence had always had spa-like aspirations, with a calming and healing atmosphere being cultivated by expansive views, plenty of outdoor spaces and a plethora of wellness amenities. However, it wasn’t until Audio Impact Inc. (San Diego, California) was brought on that everything started coming together in the name of simple serenity.
The team went all out to maximize the client connection with the oceanic landscape through a series of discreet, yet potent, wellness-focused integrations. All the while, they kept in constant contact with Wardell Builders and Blue Heron to ensure those aspirations could be easily reconciled in the home design, allowing everything to come together perfectly for the clients, and netting this project a Gold in Health & Wellness for CE Pro’s 2022 Home of the Year Awards.
A Challenging Shade Installation Pays Off in Coastal Views
Starting with the circadian lighting system, Audio Impact knew natural and imperceptible would be the way to go for this coastal abode. Minimalist DMX lighting was used to blend right into the rest of the design, while being programmed to operate on the solar schedule. In fact, the entire system is tied to an astronomical clock to ensure the utmost accuracy during transitions. In the morning and evening, the whole house glows with a rich, calming yellow, aided by Lutron Palladiom motorized shades.
The shades wound up being one of the biggest challenges the project had. Following a request by the client, the shades, too, needed to be invisible when not in use, and that included the shades covering the house’s massive floor-to-ceiling windows in the master bedroom and beyond. This posed an even greater challenge where one of the corners of the house was made to be all glass for beautiful beachfront views.

Working with Blue Heron, Audio Impact got the joints of the home adjusted to account for pocket sizing, while custom brackets were made to help with the corner shades. This ensured full coverage when the shades came down in the master bedroom, so that not even a scrap of unwanted light would intrude.
Overall, the extra effort by the building team helped create stunning views that emphasize the feel of the beach while providing an unbroken sightline for the clients to melt into the landscape of their seaside home.
Audio emanating from Origin Accoustics and James Loudspeaker speakers provide an extra layer of immersion. Drifting throughout the coastal home, the relaxing tones drop down to a barely audible silence in the meditation room, while other smart elements only add to the client’s wellness experience. The yoga room, for instance, comes with a waterfall controlled by a Crestron remote.
Outside there are yet more amenities in the form of a Jacuzzi and four TVs spread across the roof deck of the seaside home where the clients have endless opportunities to relax and engage with the outdoors.
