LG is introducing what it calls its smart home AI agent, a wheeled AI-powered robot with multi-modal technologies designed to be an all-around home manager and companion as the company seeks to establish itself as a dominant player in the smart home market.
The manufacturer says the robotic AI agent is designed to be a part of LG’s vision of a Zero Labor Home, as the device can navigate home independently and verbally interact with users using multi-modal AI technologies that combines voice and image recognition along with natural language processing.
The device, essentially a moving smart home hub that can control smart home appliances and IoT devices, features a built-in camera, speaker and various sensors to gather real-time environmental data, such as temperature, humidity and air quality.
Through a partnership with Qualcomm Technologies, the robot is powered by the Qualcomm Robotics RB5 platform, which enables on-device AI features such as face and user recognition. This helps the robot analyze data and continuously learn about the home and its users, according to LG.
LG says the AI agent, which will be unveiled at CES 2024 in Las Vegas next month, can also act as a pet monitor and security guard, providing users with the ability to see their pets remotely and get alerts if any unusual activity is detected.

In addition, the AI agent can autonomously patrol an empty home and send notifications to the user’s smart home if it finds an open window or lights left on. It can also help conserve energy by connecting with a smart outlet and turning off unused devices in the home, the company says.
LG’s goal appears to be the creation of a hyper-personalized AI agent, as the robot will greet the user at their front door, discern their emotions by analyzing voice and facial expressions, and select music or other content to suit their mood.
LG’s AI agent can also assists users in their daily lives by providing transportation details, weather updates, personal schedules, or reminders to take medications, the company says.
“Our groundbreaking smart home AI agent combines cutting-edge autonomous mobility and AI technologies with advanced communication capabilities and services to help free customers from household chores,” says Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company, in a statement. “A smart life solution company, LG will continue to help customers experience a smarter, more enjoyable life at home.”
