Set on the shoreline of Wilson Lake in Killen, Alabama, this lakeside retreat styled after a chalet presented several challenges up front that required careful consideration on the part of Mozaic Integrated Technology Design. Looking out over the massive open waters of the reservoir, the main focus of this project was in the shading, which the homeowner wanted to have automated custom shading to handle the changing light levels during the day.

“Timing was crucial here as we had to work with the builder and homeowner to ensure we could get the shades installed before the final floor finish was applied,” Johnson explains.

The first challenge that Mozaic faced was the team had to address the height of the second-story windows in the great room. According to Mozaic CEO Michael Johnson, the sheer size and placement of them posed a multitude of logistical hurdles. 

“Second, the selection of fabric was a delicate task that required a balance between light blockage and preserving the picturesque lake views,” Johnson continued. “The homeowner had very specific ideas on design and palette, and making sure we had the proper colors that were also shipping regularly with no backorder put some constraints on us.” 

A solution to those issues that came rather naturally, then, was collaborating with the team working on the chalet’s wood trim, Johnson notes. Mozaic designed custom covers for the SI shade housings that seamlessly integrated with the elegant interior woodwork.

“This exquisite touch not only conceals the shades but also introduces an element of surprise for visitors as they are unveiled,” he enthuses.

Mozaic adapted to the client’s preference for standalone controls that could be integrated later after a decision was made on his preferred control platform. This involved ensuring functionality and user-friendliness through remotes and the SI TRO.Y controller.

“Leveraging Screen Innovations allowed us flexibility to integrate smoothly when the definitive control system is determined,” Johnson says.
