With all of its brands, which include Definitive Technology, Denon, Marantz, HEOS, Classe, Boston Acoustics and Polk Audio, Sound United and its staff know a thing or two about picking demo content.
Like the rest of us, Phil Jones, global director of training, Sound United, and Paul Wilkie, manager, global communications for Sound United have years of experience within the home theater industry, and they are stuck at home.
Contributing to CE Pro’s ongoing series of slideshows that provide movie, music, video game and podcast content that people can try out while in self-quarantine, the consumer electronics veterans offer three movies each that fall under the category of Hollywood blockbusters.
Jones’ choices include a webbed superhero from the Marvel Comic Universe, a hitman with insane martial arts skills, and a trip into digital video game land.
Wilkie’s choices squarely fall under the title of science fiction and they are dominated by alien invasions and dinosaurs.

Phil Jones, Global Director of Training at Sound United
Here are my top three movies for home theater:
- “Spiderman Into the Spiderverse”
- “John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum”
- “Ready Player One”
According to Jones, these movies before getting into their plots and action sequences offer high levels of audio and video quality.
“First and foremost, the picture and audio quality are outstanding. We all listen to audiophile tracks that sound amazing, but sometimes those tracks are boring as hell,” states Jones.
“There are movies like that too, and for me the most important thing is that they sound and look awesome, but also tell fun, interesting stories. These movies make me want to watch from beginning to end and give my home theater a good stress test.”
Paul Wilkie, Manager, Global Comms at Sound United
Wilkie’s top three movies for home theater:
- “Pacific Rim”
- “Independence Day”
- “Jurassic Park”
Wilkie points out that before he recommends a movie for home theater, he’ll usually see the movie in commercial theaters first, which helps provides perspective for the transition into a home theater environment.
“I tend to gravitate towards movies I saw in theaters. Using a professional theater is a terrible reference point when it comes to enjoying your own system because well, let’s face it, not many of us have the cash to replicate that experience,” comments Wilkie.
“But, part of it is the nostalgia for me as well. Every time I see the opening Kaiju scene in ‘Pacific Rim’ I remember how awesome it was in IMAX [and I crank it up just a little more]. I saw ‘Independence Day’ when I was like eight or nine years old, so that movie still gives me goosebumps when I’m watching at home. Not to mention all of these movies sound and look amazing.”
