ADT Pulse Beta App for Android Hits the Market
Rachel Cericola | 10/13 07:00 AM,

Both iPhone and iPad users have been able to tap into ADT Pulse for quite some time. Now, the security company is extending the same courtesy and convenience to Android users. The new offering is called Pulse Beta. It’s specifically for Android users with an ADT Pulse system. If you have that security setup, this should offer some peace of mind. In addition to being able to arm and disarm the system remotely, it also has controls for lighting, cameras and thermostats. Also, if you’re the type that can’t keep…

4 Smart Security Apps
Rachel Cericola | 06/21 08:20 AM,
0 Comments
The iPod touch, iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and Android phones have changed the way that homeowners view security. Clients can call up the home or office and get a quick peek, flip on lights and make sure the doors are locked. Some apps even create a two-way experience, letting homeowners know when someone has entered the house or touched that most prized possession. “Most home security companies are offering real-time email and text message alerts whenever security systems detect an abnormality. You can also use the app to check in at…

Oops, Wrong iControl?
Julie Jacobson | 06/16 10:42 AM,

iControl Networks, based in Palo Alto, Calif., provides the home automation engine behind ADT Pulse and Xfinity Home Security. But is the platform also being rolled out by Time Warner Cable? Multichannel News thinks so. The excellent news resource for the cable industry reports today that a new home control offering from Motorola Mobility (4Home) and Honeywell will compete with iControl, “whose customers include Comcast, Time Warner Cable and ADT Security Services.” Do they know something I don’t know? I know that TWC is offering Honeywell home security systems in…

Motorola, Honeywell Developing Turnkey ‘Connected Home’ System
Julie Jacobson | 06/16 07:49 AM,
5 Comments
Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI) is building a turnkey security/home automation system with the help of Honeywell Security Group, putting the duo in direct competition with iControl and Alarm.com (and possibly Honeywell's own Total Connect 2.0) -- all providers of SaaS (software as a service) for remote home monitoring and control. Motorola began its latest foray into the connected home last year when it acquired 4Home, a developer of home-control software. But 4Home never really had a product to sell with its home automation platform. That’s where Honeywell comes in. The…

Why ADT is No.1 on CE Pro 100
Jason Knott | 05/02 07:28 AM,
3 Comments
Integrators should not be surprised to see ADT Security Services sitting atop the CE Pro 100 list for 2010, with an estimated $50 million in custom revenues. Over the past few years ADT has migrated from being strictly a low-cost provider of alarm systems to a company that offers fully integrated commercial and residential security. But guess what: that number could be much higher - an estimated $121 million higher - when income from their Pulse installations is included. However, those estimated revenues are not factored in for various reasons.…

Has Comcast/Xfinity Picked a Home Control Platform?
Julie Jacobson | 04/18 08:19 AM,

Since announcing its new home security and automation system in 2010, Xfinity (formerly Comcast) has said little about its service, including whose products the cable giant would use. That hasn't changed, but at least there there has been some movement from Xfinity in the past month. Comcast.com/homesecurity used to feature only home control systems based on iControl – just like the systems offered by ADT Pulse. Recently, however, Xfinity began showing products based on uControl – the organization that "merged" with iControl in November 2010. Enter the Xfinity Home Security…

DSC Taps iControl for Cloud-based Security, Home Automation
Julie Jacobson | 04/12 07:18 AM,
4 Comments
For a few years, DSC has offered cloud-based security services through its partner Connect24. But the existing service is fairly basic, with remote access to a home’s alarm system and surveillance cameras. It does not support home automation devices such as lighting controls and thermostats. That will change this fall when Connect24 rolls out a new offering powered by iControl’s OpenHome platform, the same technology behind ADT Pulse. The new service, introduced during the recent International Security Conference (ISC West) is fairly similar to ADT Pulse (view architecture), but instead…

Will Verizon Win the Home Automation Wars?
Julie Jacobson | 01/25 11:57 AM,

Verizon (VZ) is getting into the home automation business, challenging Comcast (Xfinity), AT&T, ADT and other mass-market providers in the coming year. Will it prevail? During the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month, we got a close look at Verizon’s products that allow users to remotely access and control their lighting, thermostats, surveillance cameras and a small array of Z-Wave wireless devices such as motorized door locks. The company's solution, called Verizon Home Monitoring and Control is based technology from 4Home, a platform developer recently acquired by Motorola. Although Verizon…

Must-Read for Clients: Should You Buy Home Control from ADT, Comcast?
Julie Jacobson | 12/22 11:50 AM,
0 Comments
How is a CE pro supposed to compete with ADT, Comcast and other mass-market installers aiming to conquer the home automation market? You can't just ignore the big guys. In fact, you may want to exploit them. After all, they'll be spending millions of dollars next year promoting services you've been providing for a decade a more. They will make your future clients aware that technology for remote home management exists, that a pro should do the installation, and that a fair price is $50 or $60 per month. So…

Bringing Sexy Back to Security
Julie Jacobson | 12/16 08:27 AM,

Have you seen the ADT Pulse ads, where a harried mother is grocery shopping with three rambunctious kids before dropping the little girl off at ballet practice? She says, “My family always keeps me busy. That’s why ADT Pulse is so great. If I forget to arm my security system, I can do it right from my phone.” Currently, more than a dozen similar commercials are running on the Internet (seriously, are all kids that boisterous?) but they’re destined for the national airwaves soon. Not far behind is Xfinity (formerly…
