Pro-Ject Audio Systems has just introduced its new The Classic Reference turntable. To those familiar with the brand, Pro-Ject has said fans should consider the newest product as an upgraded Classic EVO or enhanced version of the VPO 175 limited edition turntable.
For this latest turntable, the brand used the EVO 9 AS HG tonearm. Pro-Ject also employs high-precision ABEC 7 bearings that are housed in a massive aluminum gimbal for frictionless, resonance-free operation.
Other performance elements The Classic Reference turntable utilizes include an internally-damped S-shaped aluminum armtube that incorporates a removable headshell cartridge so that dealers or audio enthusiasts can swap transducers to their preferred product.
Pro-Ject points out the turntable’s high-mass aluminum alloy record platter is damped with TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) to eliminate unwanted resonance. The included Clamp it record clamp and Leather it record mat are included in-purchase for additional resonance control.
Elaborating on more of the performance attributes of The Classic Reference turntable, Pro-Ject notes the tonearm is mounted to a large aluminum alloy top-plate supported by TPE pods sandwiched between it and the MDF plinth. The record platter rotates on an aluminum sub-platter which is belt-driven by the AC motor. The AC motor is fed steady, clean power by Pro-Ject’s DC/AC generator which decouples the turntable from the AC mains.

Pro-ject states that like the other aforementioned turntables, its latest turntable offers onboard RCA/ground and it says the Classic Reference is ready for use with the supplied Connect it Phono E cable set.
The Classic Reference turntable is available for special order only. As part of the options the company offers, Pro-Ject says that homeowners can select between a silver with a gloss black plinth ($5,999) finish or brass with an Acacia plinth finish ($6,999).
