As expected, LG will show its first smart TV powered by Google TV at CES 2012. LG's Google TV features LG's CINEMA 3D technology that uses FPR passive glasses technology. Also included will be a Magic Remote Qwerty that combines the features of LG’s Wii-like remote and a QWERTY keyboard to make use of social media and other web features easier. LG's Google TV features an Android-based user interface and allows for multitasking, so users can tweet or browse the web while watching TV. The platform will include many familiar… View this story

Integrators might want to add telepresence systems to their offering based on new research from NPD In-Stat. The firm’s “Video Calling Across Screen Types: PC, Mobile, and Living Room” says that with so many ways to access telepresence services, the total number of video callers will surpass 380 million in 2015. That is a huge jump from the approximately 63 million video callers in 2010. Computers are still a popular method to make video calls, but more people are using TVs, tablets and cell phones to get face-time with family… View this story

The trouble with all this great content – movies, music, TV shows and more – is that you never know where it resides and how to find it and play it quickly. Do you have Shrek stored on a local NAS, for example? Or can you stream it from Netflix or buy it from iTunes? Now there’s a patent application for that (#20110225156 by John Pavlik). Crestron Electronics, a leader in home automation and media distribution, has filed a patent for “Searching Two or More Media Sources for Media.” That’s… View this story

I can still remember seeing my first “home automation” system 20 years ago at the International Security Conference. It was from security panel maker Digital Security Control (DSC), now part of Tyco. The product wasn’t getting too much attention back in 1990 for various reasons, but I recall how clunky it was to have to move menu to menu to control HVAC, lighting, security and other subsystems, especially since it was hardkey-based with a tiny black-and-white LED scrolling readout. It kind of reminds me of navigating streaming media content today.… View this story

Richard Glikes, executive director of the Home Technology Specialists of America (HTSA), has never pulled punches. His latest salvo is directed at manufacturers of connected TVs/streaming media services and 3D devices, who continue to ignore the custom market and its veteran and experienced sales staffs in favor of big-box stores, which he claims have been botching the introductions of these technologies. Specifically, he points to 3D and Google TV, saying they are now "stillborn" because the wrong channel was selected to present them. Here is his full letter: I saw… View this story

That giant sucking sound you hear is Google TV pulling out of the Consumer Electronics Show. Apparently, Google has asked Sony, Toshiba, LG, Sharp and possibly other partners to delay the introduction of new TVs incorporating the new Web TV platform. The New York Times reports that Google “caught some of the manufacturers off guard” with the late-hour request: “Google as a company is not a particularly partner-friendly or partner-focused company,” said James L. McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester, who added that because of the delay, it might take another… View this story

I've spent some time with Google TV and have formed some definite opinions. Logitech Revue - Google TV in a box - looks non-descript and comes with a wireless keyboard with limited remote functions. I installed it into my system, which includes a TiVo HD DVR, Classe SSP-800 surround processor, B&W 800 series speaker package, a stack of Rotel amps, a 2:39 Stewart screen, and a Runco Q-750 LED front projector. Hook up is very simple: the idea is you have to pass the signal from the cable/sat/TiVo through the… View this story

Following a presentation on "Streaming Media" earlier this month during CE Pro Live, integrators gathered in a virtual chat room to discuss the topic. One overriding theme emerged: Streaming content is confusing and integrators aren't quite sure how to present it to their clients and how to profit from it. Talk turned to Hulu, Google TV, Apple TV, Vudu, Roku, Boxee, digital rights management and the problems of bandwidth limitation. In other chats during CE Pro Live, integrators expressed frustration about Internet providers throttling bandwidth, charging more for usage and… View this story

For the past few years the consumer electronics industry has been merging the Internet with traditional products like televisions and disc players with the goal of delivering a full multimedia experience to consumers and now with the roll out of Sony's new Powered by Google TV line of products the process could be considered complete. Sony's Google TV line of products includes five televisions and one Blu-ray disc player that incorporate Google's living room technologies. Highlighting these half dozen products is the $1,400 NSX-46GT1 46-inch television that includes features like… View this story
