Vizio Drops Out of Plasma TV Market

Five-year-old company will focus all its attention on LCDs, its technology that "moves off the shelves fastest."

Vizio is dropping out of the plasma TV market, The New York Times reports.

This comes just days after it was reported that Pioneer may also leave the plasma TV market. Vizio will continue to sell LCDs.

Vizio co-founder Laynie Newsome, according to The New York Times, says there were a couple reasons for this decision:
  • Plasmas don't show as well in big-box stores, giving consumers the impression that LCDs have a better picture
  • Vizio wants to devote all available shelf space to technology that moves off the shelves fastest
Don't be fooled by the plasma models still listed on Vizio's Web site — its plasma inventory is basically dry.

The five-year-old company's first LED-backlit LCD will ship in July, while its first Blu-ray player will hit the market in May.

LG, Panasonic, and Samsung are the lone three large-volume plasma manufacturers left, which begs the question: are plasmas a doomed technology?

OK, this is a scary trend for those of us who want the best displays in the flat panel format…Plasmas just cannot be beat by an LCD.  And to have Pioneer, the best display bar none out there drop out…...it’s a sad day.
Darn those BB, Walmart and big box employees who push the LCD’s to customers…...your taking away the cheaper, better picture, wider viewing angle choice…..

Plasma - the CRT of the 21st century.

On the plus side, those higher priced - and let’s be honest, WAY better looking plasmas - might see some price drops in the future.

I jumped into HDTV w/ CRT RPTV tech a few years back. Once calibrated & tweaked, it was & still is one of the best looking HD pics I have seen. In FPs, plasma really only comes close - if not better. When I do go the wall mount method of TV viewing, I’ll still go plasma.

I love my Panny Plasma, and before I bought it I tried a Samsung and Sony LCD, and I couldn’t stand either one.  The Panny just produced a better picture.

The only good news for me is, by the time I need a new HDTV, LCDs will all be LED backlit, and they will all have improved panels.  So that when the day does finally come to replace my Panny, I’m sure LCDs will actually be better.  At least I hope so.

Finally, I know there is a God. Vizio is one of the biggest pieces crap on the market in any medium. They should not only fold up their tents with LCD panels too, but be held liable for impersonating a TV.

The only thing of any value in a sealed Vizio box, (if you can find one), is the “stop watch” that replaces the typical warranty card.

I’m sure Costo, Sam’s Club, Wallmart, 7-11, and the local Quickie Mart will all be very upset…

Dave, Those are some harsh words. I have been the happy owner of a Vizio LCD for about a year and a half now.  Is it as good as my sony? no. But was it much cheaper? Hell yes.  For the money and for a secondary FP Vizio is hard to beat.  Ours is in our bedroom and the sony in the media room. Other than watching evening news and morning television the Vizio doesn’t get much of a workout but as a secondary tv it shouldn’t.

Jason,
I agree with you 100%. For a kids college dorm room, guest bed room, or a secondary room, it is an economical choice. My point was simply to point out that, (and you agree with me), that you get what you pay for.

However, there are too many consumers that cannot justify the large price differences between a Pioneer or Sony quality set once they see a Vizio advertised at 1/2 the cost for the size. These people, unlike yourself, are ignorant to the fact that Vizio is the “Ford Pinto” of TV’s.

It’s no different than forcing them to justify purchasing a complete HTIB or mini system that boasts 100 watts of power for only $399.00 and a real A/V receiver that sells for $1,500.00 by itself.

Due to big box store sales people with small box brains, the impression is , “More watts, more power, bigger TV & less money equals high end brands are rip-offs with huge profit margins.”

I still stand by my comments that Vizio is a piece of crap, and most people would experience more enjoyment playing in the empty box than viewing the set. Not to mention, the empty box is more reliable and the staples used to seal it are more durable.

Its sad to see Plasma going away. I always get a laugh at friends LCD screens that can remove a persons freckles from their face shown on the screen, simply when that person moves their head!! Gotta love motion blur grin

These were on some very good LCD’s too BUT it is getting better. I just hope OLED comes down in price. I’d pay $5k for a 55inch model for sure….long wait I guess…...

The LCD at the store always show scenic movies. They don’t show fast action or darker movies like The Dark Knight, then people will see that LCD isn’t as good.

I have a 37” Vizio LCD which I’m really happy with, so I don’t really care if Vizio is getting rid of their plasmas. I might even get another LCD for my bedroom.

It seems like Vizio is doing great in the U.S. market, largely in part to LCD sales, so I don’t think they will hurt from this. They have a bunch of great products to check out:

This comment is correct if you don’t mind muddy greys instead of ink-like blacks. If you never compare Plasma to LCD away from the bright lights of a showroom then you really don’t know what you are missing.
Also, as I said before, watch a persons freckles vanish as they move their head on your LCD (motion blur)
The best quality product (plasma vs LCD) doesn’t always win. Sad.

Taz,
Not only is Vizio getting rid of plasmas, everyone who purchased one will also be getting rid of them shortly when they fail to turn on.

The good news is that Vizio plans on coming out with their “Serving Tray” adapter kit so you don’t have to make a trip to the dump or recycling center to dispose of the set.

I believe a 50” Vizio can serve up to 6 people using Jonas Brothers CD’s as coasters.

Could somebody tell me why Vizio is in business again? They’re a 3rd rate TV company! Why would anyone waste their money on a TV that has purple blacks & absolutely no discrete commands to control the set? Whenever I see Vizios in restaurants or bars, I laugh thinking about how the employees have to turn off those TV’s everynight. One goes off, the one next to it goes back on again. Or they have to attach a long 3 in. pipe to the end of the remote & hold it up to the IR receiver & turn them off one by one! Put Vizio out of their misery by not buying the product! All they do is pollute the market with pathetic quality & make installers job to try to make a living more difficult! So go away!!!

Gearatio-
BRAVO!!!

FYI: The problems you noticed with their remotes is because the client did not purchase their optional “Night Vision Gun Scope Sniper Adapter Remote Control Accessory Kit.”

The 55” Vizio LCD I won in their sweepstakes has as good a picture and color as my 32” Toshiba.  Also has a nice glow in the dark Universal remote.  Think its great as long as it keeps working.

Posted by Dave Stevens  on  07/16  at  01:30 PM

Diane,
Look for another, “nice glow in the dark” other than the remote… That would be the panels’ power supply.

At least you won it in their, “I Can’t Believe It’s Not A TV” sweepstakes.

We all wish you the best of luck, and recommend that you keep a box of Arm & Hammer baking soda within throwing distance for those stubborn electrical fires.
