Outdoor lighting has evolved far beyond pathway lights and simple on/off controls, according to FX Luminaire Regional Sales Manager Anthony Italia.
In this CE Pro interview, Italia explains how homeowners are increasingly looking to transform their backyards into fully integrated entertainment and relaxation spaces with customizable lighting scenes, dimming, zoning, and RGBW color control. The trend reflects a broader shift in how people use outdoor spaces following the pandemic, when many homeowners invested heavily in pools, patios, outdoor kitchens, and backyard gathering areas.
Italia says integrators are uniquely positioned to capitalize on this trend because homeowners already expect seamless control experiences indoors. Extending that same experience outdoors through platforms like Control4, Crestron, URC, Elan, and Lutron has become a natural progression for luxury smart home projects.
The conversation explores how lighting scenes can adapt to different activities and moods throughout the year, from relaxing evenings around a fire pit to large outdoor parties, holidays, and even gender reveal celebrations. Italia also discusses the practical advantages of zoning and dimming outdoor lighting systems, including energy savings, improved comfort, reduced light pollution, and greater flexibility for homeowners.
According to Italia, one of the biggest opportunities for integrators is simply asking homeowners how they live outside and how they want to improve those experiences. He notes that many homeowners already understand scene control and dimming indoors, making it easier to introduce similar capabilities outdoors.
