Five Instances of Smart Homes in Modern Movies and TV
“Missing”
This newer film combines internet sleuthing, some nice product placement for Apple, and home security systems to bring what was a pretty good thriller. This is also a good break from the mostly negative examples I’ve given here, and one that depicts smart home technology as incredibly valuable and potentially live-saving.
In short, a teenager’s widowed mother goes missing while on vacation and never returns home, so the always-online teen pieces the puzzle together with her knowledge of technology. Almost the entire film takes place from the perspective of the teenager’s MacBook and iPhone, with Amazon’s Ring security system making what seems like a few dozen cameos. Without revealing too much, surveillance camera systems and Siri end up saving the day.
This is actually one of the few depictions of smart homes in film or TV that doesn’t paint the technology in a negative light. In fact, technology is exactly what leads to a positive outcome for the family.
