The 2023 lawsuit brought by Snap One against AVA for infringement on intellectual property concerning patented tech, trade secrets, trade dress, and more related to remote controls has been settled.
ADI | Snap One and AVA today announced that they reached a settlement in the federal lawsuit filed by Snap One in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah.
While the terms of the agreement are confidential, the settlement resolves the dispute between Snap One and AVA related to the lawsuit on mutually agreeable terms, according to AVA.
The Story Behind the Snap One and AVA Lawsuit
The lawsuit, which was filed by Snap One in August 2023, alleges that AVA’s remote control technologies and other attributes were copies of Snap’s NEEO Remote.
AVA Co-Founders Raphael Oberholzer and Ted Haeger established the company with industry experience, the former as NEEO founder and the latter as an executive from Snap One brand Control4. (After filing the lawsuit in 2023, Snap One was acquired by Resideo Technologies and merged with Resideo’s ADI Global Distribution business in June 2024.)

Charlotte, N.C.-based Snap One filed the lawsuit Aug. 14, 2023, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah. In summary, the 73-page filing by Snap One alleged that:
- AVA’s products violated five of Snap One’s patents that cover technologies including remote control, control systems, media distribution, intercom systems and network architecture.
- The defendants’ remote controls were copies of the Snap One NEEO remote that AVA employees developed while working for Snap One. Consequently, Josh and AVA have violated additional Snap One proprietary rights including trade dress, trade secrets, and confidential information contractual obligations.
Snap One’s lawsuit included Josh.ai’s remote technologies, but Josh was not involved in the settlement.
What Josh.ai Has to Say Regarding the Settlement
“Josh.ai is aware of the recent settlement between Snap and AVA. While this matter does not directly involve Josh.ai, we remain committed to working collaboratively toward a fair resolution that upholds the integrity of innovation in the industry,” Josh Co-Founder and CEO Alex Capecelatro tells CE Pro.
“We will continue to focus on delivering cutting-edge home automation solutions to our customers and partners.”
AVA: Companies Now Can ‘Pursue Innovation Without limitations’
Haeger calls the result a “huge win” for the Swiss-American-based smart home company, which provides the AVA Cinema Remote and AVA OS to the custom integration channel.
AVA CEO Oberholzer, meanwhile, had released this statement to CE Pro:
“I’m very happy (and proud) that this federal lawsuit has been successfully settled after over a year and a half of an intense dispute.
“It’s no fun when a billion-dollar company comes after you. It can be scary at times, knowing you’re a small startup with a limited budget to defend yourself. Such a lawsuit could take away resources meant for innovation and potentially harm your company. But once these challenges hit, there’s no way around them. So we faced it head-on with a strong ‘challenge accepted’ mindset.
“Disagreements between companies are a natural part of a competitive and innovative industry. By reaching this settlement, both AVA Inc. and Snap One are prioritizing innovation and committing to the success of the professional installers we serve.
“Our industry could not have wished for a better outcome. This settlement provides clarity to the market and allows both companies to pursue innovation without limitations.”
