Over the years, CE pros have seen a gradual introduction of what we can call ‘smart water’ solutions to the channel and this year at CES 2024, one smart water offering is getting a boost through the inclusion of everyone’s favorite efficiency too. Originally introduced in 2019 by Moen, the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff is getting a major upgrade through the inclusion of AI, according to the kitchen and bath company.
The base model works by attaching to a home’s main water supply and acting as a monitor for the home’s entire water system, detecting any abnormalities that might hint at leaks. Where the AI kicks in, according to Moen, is that now the Flo Smart Water Monitor can learn the unique water patterns of the home, increasing its sensitivity to changes in flow states.
According to Moen, this allows the monitor to detect leaks “as small as one drop per minute,” and promptly shut off the water supply so no significant damage can occur to the home. It will even reportedly purge water lines to prevent freezing and the buildup of stagnant water that can accumulate while clients are away from the home.
Using the app and a Wi-Fi, homeowners can also get a better idea about the water ecosystem in their home, though, unfortunately, the system is not able to measure water quality. What it can do, however, according to a survey from Moen, is alert people to potential water leaks well in advance. According to Moen, 60 percent of the people who have adopted the device since its launch discovered a leak they didn’t know they had within 30 days.
The Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff can also enhance and automate conservation efforts in the home, giving homeowners greater control over usage by fixture type and set conservation goals that help better regulate said usage.

Ultimately, the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff sits at the center of Moen’s Smart Water Network, though it can pair with other leak detection products like the Smart Sump Pump Monitor and Smart Leak Detectors to prevent leaks and water damage. The monitor and shutoff can also be installed as a standalone system.
Aside from the obvious question of “Does this mean I’m going to have to partner up with plumbers on projects now?”, this, when paired with newer releases like Moen’s smart irrigation system at CES last year, has long posed the question of whether “water-as-a-service” makes sense as a business models for integrators to get into.
Many on both the manufacturer and integration sides say that smart water products are incredibly valuable for both consumers and third-party insurance companies. Water damage gets claimed six times more than fire and eight times more than theft, accounting for 24 percent of all insurance claims and ultimately costing one in every six homes an average of $12,500.
“If you’ve ever experienced leaks or damage from water in your home, you never want to experience it again. It’s costly, emotionally draining, and can uproot your life for extended periods of time,” says Suzy Kummer, senior product manager, Moen Smart Water Network.
The new Flo Smart Water Shutoff with enhanced AI capabilities is being showcased at CES this week and will be available at around $500 MSRP to start, so if any integrators are around in Vegas this week and have access to the show, you can see it in action at Moen’s booth on the tradeshow floor. If not, Moen invites those interested in learning more to check out its website at moen.com/smart-home.
