Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, which takes place Sunday, Feb. 5 2012 at 6:30 p.m. (ET), is going to set a record as the most-watched program in television history, according to Media Life's annual pre-Super Bowl poll. It will be the third straight year that the Super Bowl has set that record. Social media is a significant platform for companies to integrate into their customer service strategy. According to analyst firm Gartner, this trend will continue with at least 35 percent of customer service centers having some form of social media capability by 2013. Companies interested in social media customer support are looking for methods and strategies to follow. A recently released white paper examines how brands, including Apple, Best Buy, Google, Dell, HP, RIM, and DirecTV, are developing dedicated “social care” channels and which methods are most successful. Top 2012 Trend: Desktop/Computer Audio
Robert Archer | 01/13 08:14 AM,

Back when Jim Lackey, president of Natural Sound, first opened his business, consumers were entrenched in audiophile music. Alternative entertainment solutions - aside from two-channel stereo - were few and far between during Natural Sound's early years. Consumers were just getting their first look at the original gaming system (the Atari 2600). Since then, consumer electronics have evolved into VCRs, personal computers, DVDs, the Internet, HD and now streaming media. Natural Sound, like other small consumer electronics stores, has had to add these new technologies into their portfolio. The company…

Savant Systems has announced iTunes Match compatibility for Savant SmartSystem controllers. iTunes Match is a subscription service available from Apple that, via compatibility with the Savant environment, enables users to automatically sync music and playlists between their home computer, any compatible iOS devices and their Savant system. This means that both transfer and access of music files is easier, including music purchased from iTunes, CDs imported from a personal collection, or purchased from another online service. Subscribers will benefit from a seamless interface - playlists from computers or iOS devices…

There is more good news for those who are interested in, or banking on, voice control technology as one of the next big things in custom electronics - we certainly are, having named it as one of our Top 5 Hot Home Tech Opportunities for 2012. LG Electronics' new Magic Remote for its Cinema 3D Smart TVs won't be your run-of-the-mill clicker. Nope, the Magic Remote may sound more like something out of an infomercial, but LG says the device will be equipped with some of those newfangled alternative input…

5 Reasons iPads Are Horrible Home Theater Remotes
Jason Knott | 12/20 08:24 AM,
14 Comments
Eric Thies, president of CE Pro 100 integrator DSI Entertainment Systems, loves iPads, but just not as a home theater remote control. He recently shared with his clients via DSI's blog five reasons why he hates the iPad as a remote. Too big: The iPad is just the right size for a table, but it's too unwieldy to be a practical remote control. If you are a power user, maybe you need all of this screen real estate to cover every single DVR button. For me, unnecessary. I need hard…

Audiofile Engineering Quiztones for Mac
Robert Archer | 12/15 07:30 AM,
Normally it takes years for musicians and recording professionals to develop their listening skills. Having these listening skills helps musicians to identify chord changes, keys and chord voicings, and on the recording side of the music industry, having a finely tuned ear enables recording engineers to identify specific frequencies and changes in equalization. Audiofile Engineering's Quiztones software learning tools may not help audiophiles and electronics professionals to expedite the development of their listening skills, but it will help them to gain easy access to a set of learning tools to…

Remote Technologies Inc. (RTI) RTiDock iPod Dock
Robert Archer | 12/13 04:10 AM,
As much as Apple's competitors may try they've been unable to supplant the Cupertinio, California-based company as the top mobile music player manufacturer. Remote Technologies Inc.'s (RTI) new RTiDock provides the millions of Apple iPod owning homeowners a solution that controls and syncs their iPod with their entire iTunes library. RTI says its new dock provides installers with the ability to sync with iTunes over a network and it provides full control and navigation capabilities through a video display. The product can be installed in a rack mount environment or…

iTunes Needs to Improve Quality of Music Downloads
Robert Archer | 12/09 08:19 AM,
10 Comments
It wasn't that long ago that I had to manage the content stored on my iPod and first-generation iPhone. Until I upgraded the hard drive on my iMac, I remember managing the amount of hard drive space my iTunes content took up by prioritizing the content I wanted to keep in tact through the import methods I used. Now with the introduction of Apple's iCloud and other cloud-based storage services, storage issues will soon be a thing of the past. Music lovers will no longer be limited to the restrictions…

How Steve Jobs Rattled the Home Automation Industry
Julie Jacobson | 12/08 12:43 PM,
0 Comments
I can hear it now: Why on earth would the leading magazine for the custom electronics industry select Steve Jobs as Person of the Year, a guy who seemingly slaughtered margins for CE pros? Who made it nearly impossible to sell $10,000 touchscreens for the home? Who compromised the high standards of customization set by our fair industry? Let me reiterate first that we never promised to anoint the person who had the most positive impact on our industry in 2011 - only the most disruptive. Having said that, I…
