Netflix will end support for second and third-generation Apple TV devices after July 31.
Apple news sites Apple Insider and MacRumors report that the company sent an email to some subscribers informing them of the move, saying the decision was made to “maintain the best possible Netflix experience” by focusing on devices that can support Netflix’ new technology.
Netflix did not make it explicitly clear why it is dropping support for these older Apple TVs. However, it’s likely simply due to their age, as they each were released over a decade ago and won’t be able to support newer codecs.
Apple has gone through several versions of its digital media player, with the most recent version, the third-generation Apple TV 4K being released in October 2022.
Apple released the first Apple TV in 2007, the second-generation Apple TV in 2010 and the third-generation Apple TV in 2012. In 2015, Apple released the Apple TV HD, technically the fourth-generation of the device running on a new operating system, tvOS, along with an app store for downloading third-party apps.

The company has not yet said when it plans to release a new version of the media player, and despite previous speculation, reports suggest it won’t come during Apple’s WWDC event next week.
