Pro-Ject’s Essential USB turntable
Arlen Schweiger | 04/27 12:07 PM, 0 Comments
The recent surge in vinyl music has been well documented, so the question for CE pros is how to respond if more clients start asking you to add turntables into audio installations. One really ideal entry point is Pro-Ject’s Essential USB turntable. While Pro-Ject offers a range of higher price points, the Essential is its entry model. MSRP is $299, with the USB version $399, and it comes in white, black and a stunning red such as my review model. As a relative newbie, I did find setup - dealing… View this story

Since we’ve been focusing a lot lately on audio quality, audiophiles and dynamic range, here’s a reminder that this Saturday (April 21) is Record Store Day. I know, it seemed like just yesterday we were celebrating Dynamic Range Day (actually it was a month ago). Record Store Day, which celebrates independent record stores, is now in its fifth year and has become so popular that it even added a second day last fall to coincide with Black Friday. CE pros can use the relative popularity of Record Store Day to… View this story

I think it's been said that mathematics is the universal language, but I'd like to think it's music. After covering Integrated Systems Europe in Amsterdam, I was fortunate enough to extend my first trip to Europe and do some whirlwind sightseeing. I visited a small town in Germany called Koblenz, then on to Luxembourg and finally Brussels. As anyone who attended ISE could tell you, it was bitter cold (though thankfully not as cold or snowy as in Eastern Europe where people were literally freezing to death). Any reason to… View this story

With the vinyl format bigger than ever, long-time category supporters such as Audio Technica (AT) are benefiting through the increased interest in their respective products now that consumers are spinning records again. One product that is receiving a lot of interest from Audio Technica is the AT 150ANV moving-coil phono cartridge. The product was released to celebrate its 50th anniversary as a company, and AT says the cartridge combines traditional phono cartridge design elements with new technologies to provide music lovers with a product that taps into the best qualities… View this story

A few of the many reasons I've gravitated to vinyl over the last couple of years are exemplified by the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 20th anniversary reissue of Blood Sugar Sex Magik in the format, which arrived at my house for the holidays. 1) It's part of a growing trend of vinyl-reissued music that was made during a time when vinyl LPs seemed as dead as ... well as dead the hairband rock whose coffin was being sealed by Nirvana et al in the early 1990s. Stuff that didn't make… View this story

For those who haven't visited a music store in a while it may be shocking to see how much real estate that vinyl now occupies as it sits next to CDs and racks of Blu-ray discs. The resurgence of vinyl and turntables has sparked sales in vinyl accessories like Shure's M97xE phono cartridge. The M97xE phono cartridge is an affordable upgrade that allows vinyl lovers to improve the sound of their turntables for short money. Shure says the cartridge features a low-mass, thin-wall aluminum elliptical stylus with a diamond tip.… View this story

All signs point to a nostalgia for vinyl, and the rebirth of two-channel audio, as we’ve reported often this year. So it’s no surprise that the topic generated a lively discussion during CEProLive virtual conference yesterday. Led by CE Pro’s Bob Archer, the scheduled chat “Polar Opposites: Analog Vinyl & Digital Music,” touched on turntables, networking and favorite albums from way back when. My vinyl memory? George Carlin. As I wrote in the chat, “I think I memorized that album. I can recite all 7 dirty words.” Bjørn Jensen of… View this story

I continue to be flabbergasted at the revival of the vinyl format among music lovers, including myself. Sure, it never really stopped being a format of choice for audiophiles, and colleagues Bob Archer and Grant Clauser both noted that record demos were common at last week's Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in Denver. But what's amazing me is how the surge in vinyl appreciation seems to be much more genuine than some retro 70s or 80s fad, like what Hollywood has tried to force upon us with a Footloose remake here,… View this story

Maybe some would say the the CE Pro staff is a bunch of old-school curmudgeons (this excludes our web staff), but collectively I believe---I'm including Julie in this because I could see her rocking to Abba's Greatest Hits or Cheap Trick Live at Budokan on some classic turntable [just think Fast Times at Ridgemont High]---we've all been swept in the vinyl phenomenon. Interestingly, we aren't alone. Vinyl sales have basically tripled and we've heard from many readers that they are selling turntables once again. We know that CE Pro has… View this story

After nearly been given up for dead the vinyl format has surged back to become a viable audio entertainment option for both the young and old. Helping all these vinyl fans take care of their prized music collections is the Pittsburgh-based company Spin Clean. The company's newly updated Record Washer system MKII, which has been in production since 1975, has recently been updated with new UV-grade resin for a stronger and more fade resistant washer basin, as well as redesigned rollers, new brushes, foam materials, and a reformulated cleaning solution… View this story
