Study Says HDTV Shipments Surpass SDTV for First Time
iSuppli says HDTVs to grow to 241.2 million units worldwide by 2012.
Global shipments of HDTVs have surpassed that of SDTVs for the first time, according to iSuppli.
iSuppli forecasts HDTVs, now the leading TV shipped globally, to grow to 241.2 million units by 2012. That number would be up from 97.1 million units in 2007, marking a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 20 percent.
"The technology is everywhere these days — on broadcast television, on cable, on satellite, and on the Internet," says Sheri Greenspan, senior analyst for consumer electronics at iSuppli Corp.
The study also says shipments of non-HDTVs will decline to 23.1 million units by 2012. That would be down from 114.8 million units in 2007, a decreasing CAGR of 27 percent.
"You can't escape hearing about something being broadcast in HD or getting the most out of your HD receiver or the most HD channels available."
HD settop boxes are growing at a CAGR of 36 percent and will represent 50 percent of the STB market by 2012, according to iSuppli.
Another iSuppli study says LCD sales will reach $110.8 billion, becoming the largest CE market.
