Samsung Connect Home Pro router, mesh networking, SmartThings in One

Their Words

Samsung Connect Home Pro is the industry’s first Smart Wi-Fi System to combine mesh networking technology with a SmartThings Hub. The all-in-one Wi-Fi and smart home device delivers maximum bandwidth and provides simple control of connected devices.

My Words

It's a smart Wi-Fi mesh networking system with a full SmartThings home-automation hub built in (ZigBee, Z-Wave, app, the works). Compared to the other Connect Home products, the Pro version delivers more bandwidth - up to 1733 Mbps@5 GHz, 800 .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) GHz. The device retails for $249, but you can find it for as little as $150 during the holidays.

2018 will be the year we start seeing more routers, gateways and networking systems endowed with home-automation technologies -- the so-called "smart gateway" we've been talking about for years. If the category flies, the Samsung product should be a winner, given the large number of SmartThings fans. The big question will be: Will this category confuse?

Do I want it? I think so. Samsung isn't well known for networking, so that makes me wonder if the that aspect of the system is as robust as other popular mesh-networking solutions from companies that have always focused on the category. I don't believe the system has network diagnostics and alerts for potential security breaches like some of the other products do. I've never used SmartThings and would love to try it out. For $149 on Black Friday, I'd pick one up, but add a couple of the mesh modules for good measure.

Will it make it? See above: If the category of smart gateways flies, then Samsung Connect Home Pro should be a leader.
