Why HDMI Speed is Confusing

Confusion comes from a number of terms that tend to mean the same thing. Here are some examples.

Is the speed of HDMI a real issue? Well, yes and no.

The HDMI interface as of October 2008 has two Rev 1.3 operating system clock rates (speed): 74.5 MHz and 340 MHz per channel. This is defined under the HDMI cable categories "Standard" and "High Speed."

That being said, why do we continue to receive questions about speed-related issues?

The confusion comes from a number of terms that tend to be used for the same meaning. Some examples are bandwidth, frequency response, data rates and clock rates.

Depending on how you want to rate the system, you can end up with different numbers. So let's define these numbers and how they relate:

Signaling data rate per channel represents each discrete channel, red, blue and green.

HDMI data rate represents the aggregate rates per channel. So, as an example, the "per channel" rate for 1080p is 1.49 Gbps multiplied times three, which equals 4.46 Gbps.

System TMDS clock rate uses Megahertz as its unit of measurement rather than gigabits per second (i.e., 148.5 Mhz) — same thing, but different.

At the end of the day, no matter what bandwidth you operate under, the real meat behind it is its integrity.

I am getting tired of these “Stories” that you put as a teaser on the main page. They look interesting so I click on it only to be disappointed. It looks like you took 5 minutes to write this piece.

Give us MORE MEAT and LESS GARNISH!

What is the point of this article if you did not end, but just added to the confusion.

Unfortunately I am limited to the amount of space for these columns. I try to get as much important data up and explained in a very small 300 word column. But please remember, you are always welcome to email me directly. Should you want more depth on a subject or even a question that we may have missed due to space limitations, please feel free to write me directly. Many write about other questions that I also respond on with much more detail. In some cases I even call these people on the phone. I return all of my mail so you will always get an answer. I am sorry for these limitations, I do the best I can with limited space on these complex subjects.

I would also like to add that many times some content is edited out. I am not sure why but that is the way it works. This last column I just discovered there was quite a bit taken out, it will probably appear in the magazine.
