iPort Ships In-Wall iPad, iPod Touch Docks

iPad dock has an MSRP of $499 while the iPod touch dock is $250. Company sees docks as alternative to more expensive proprietary touchpanels.

iPort is now shipping its new Control Mount Series for the Apple iPod touch and iPad. Both products are targeted at the custom installation market. (Update: iPort now explains that the product will ship "later this month in limited quantities." More details in the "Comments" section below.)

The iPort CM-IW100T (CM100) Control Mount encases an iPod touch in a wall-mounted chassis with a magnetically attached, rectangular fascia, as does the iPort CM-IW2000 (CM2000) for the iPad, transforming the handheld devices into in-wall touchscreens running control apps over WiFi.

The CM100 also allows for audio playback from the iPod touch for both stored music and streaming audio from any capable apps.

iPort, which along with sister company Sonance is a division of Dana Innovations, sees both the CM100 and CM2000 as alternatives for integrators vs. more expensive proprietary touchpanels for controlling audio, video, lighting and climate. It's the same perspective expressed last week by Savant, announcing it was discontinuing dedicated touchpanels. iPort was the first company to unveil an in-wall iPod dock back in 2005.

“From the very beginning of iPort, it has been our mission to help the custom installation community embrace and profit from the adoption and integration of Apple products,” says Ari Supran, CEO of Dana Innovations. “As Apple's products have evolved from media players to intuitive user interfaces, we remain committed to helping custom installers integrate these products into their clients’ homes in a way that is aesthetically compelling and easy to use. Typically, there is not a profit model available to the CI dealer for an Apple product. By bundling an iPort Control Mount with an Apple product, the dealer can - as with all of our iPort in-wall and free standing docks - integrate Apple products and realize profit from the sale of an iPort product."

Supran gave CE Pro a sneak preview of the docks several months ago. Both the CM100 and CM2000 can be installed in a vertical or horizontal orientation. The suggested retail prices are $250 for the CM100 and $499 for the CM2000.

UPDATE:
About that Power Button on the iPort In-Wall Dock
Turns out, the power button on the face of iPort's iPod and iPad docking stations weren't necessary, but can it be used for something else?

There are some who would say Kaleidescape is a ripoff, dedicated touchscreens are a ripoff, pricey cables are a ripoff ... all depends on what they’re after.

I can see from the posters here that many must work out of their cars and price chop control 4 to feed their family this week. If you can’t sell an iPad $500 and an in wall dock $500, you simply need to head out of business. At a 1/3 the price of a legacy style 10” in wall touch panel this is a slam dunk. Perhaps you should learn a lesson in profit dollar contribution vs cheapest prices. I would gladly sell my customer a dock for $500 and make $200 than have to sell 7 to make the same.  Then again, if you only need money to buy diapers and not support a company, employees, standards or the likes I am sure that $30 will seem like a big day for you.

Kscape is a totally different animal, its hardware and software in a bullet-proof package. This is a piece of plastic and an iPad/iPod/iPhone charger. The charger is $30 from the Apple store.

This solution is just too expensive for what it is. Has nothing to do with someone’s ability to sell, or their commitment to CE. This is dollars the client is being asked to pay, and the value is just not there. That is the beauty of competition, cheaper alternatives will be released. I would guess we’ll see them in Sept in Atlanta. It will be hard to hold this price after that.

Hillarious’s clients can keep paying the premium, but I’ll make sure mine get the value so they can spend on quality and features - not plastic.

I can see from the posters here that many must work out of their wallet and price gouge to feed their family and keep up with the Jones. If your goal is only to sell an system just to make a profit and walk to the bank after feeling happy about giving a customer an overpriced solution, then you are in the wrong business and should head to Wall Street where its all about the dollar, greed and “whats in it for me.”  As far as I am concerned, we are in a business of customer satisfaction that often includes a wow factor. I dont see a $500 piece of plastic as “wow” although some seem to only focus on the the “wow! I can really make some underserved dollars on this!” Ranks up there with trunkslammers.

As previously stated, if someone wants to have this and see’s value in it, then it will get installed. My point is TO ME its doesnt possess that value. To state that anyone who doesn’t see this piece of plastic as a great opportunity must be a trunk slammer is short sided and offensive to some I am sure. Does that mean if you like it, you view it as an opportunity to rip someone off? Silly.

By the way, Hillarious, our company vehicles don’t have trunks. I could come to your place, though, and slam yours if you like. Would that make you feel better?

It’s all relative. Kaleidescape is not cheap but its not a rip off as it has its place, features, ability and need.

Some drive Toyota, some drive a Benz. They both will get you from point A to point B. One may be faster and more stylish.

Looking forward to a better piece of plastic at a fair price to simply house an iPad. There is a place and need for that.

Well, I’m with you, Tuck—I personally would not spend $500 on an in-wall mount, but thankfully for integrators I’m not a typical customer. Aesthetics matter to a lot of people. I’d be happy with a slim on-wall mount. (Heck I’d be happy with an iPad period!).

Dang nick,

I was hoping to keep that “under wraps” until Cedia….toooo late

Maybe then Jason will “listen”.

I also know of 3 more brands of “in wall” Ipad docks that will be at Cedia. 2 of which will be under $200.

Maybe Jason forgot to tell us that the iPort INCLUDES THE IPAD!!!!!!  hahahahaha

Dont know if you realize but the $500 ipad mount will not allow you to send audio out.  You have to modify the enclosure to install and audio out into earphone jack.
