Best Buy, Walmart Finally Agree: Glenn Beck is an Idiot

Best Buy and Walmart — two big-box retailers that have been sparring lately over which company offers a more “specialty electronics” experience — seem to agree on one thing: Glenn Beck isn’t good for business.
The host of Fox News’ “The Glenn Beck Program” has been in the news lately for comments he made while appearing on “Fox & Friends.”
Best Buy and Walmart are among several companies that reportedly pulled their ads from Beck’s show after his comments. The ads have been moved to other Fox News programming.
Here’s what Beck said while discussing how President Obama handled the Henry Louis Gates situation:
"This president, I think, has exposed himself as a guy, over and over and over again, who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture. I don't know what it is."
Asked about Obama’s cabinet being filled mostly by white people, Beck said:
"I'm not saying he doesn't like white people. I'm saying he has a problem. He has a — this guy is, I believe, a racist."
So Obama “has a deep seated hatred for white people” and “I’m not saying he doesn’t like white people” — in two consecutive breathes.
Beck changed his message almost as quickly as Best Buy and Walmart did when Circuit City and Tweeter went out of business. Suddenly they both became “specialty retailers.”
Let’s be honest. These advertising boycotts are always pretty disingenuous. Companies never seem to pull their ads until the media outrage reaches a boiling point.
As with most complex issues, I always like to get Stephen Colbert’s take:

jberger,
not quite sure what your gripe is here. there really isn’t any political commentary on our end in this blog. it’s about someone (Beck) who commented on a political figure (Obama). what side did we cover?
Not a gripe, just a comment.
It’s not an article about how advertising boycotts may impact our industry, or how it’s even relevant to the average CEpro reader. It’s an opinion about Glenn Beck, and your chance to call him an Idiot in the blog.
When article is headlined “Glenn Beck is an Idiot”, re-enforced by a well chosen photo, and finish out with a clip re-enforcing the headline again, it reads like a slanted, one-sided opinion piece, and seems out of place.
It’s simply not the type of article that appeals to me as a reader, especially in a trade mag.
And this is CE news?? Who says Beck is wrong anyway, maybe he is right…although I dont watch him (or any other talking head). Why? THEY’RE ALL IDIOTS.
jberger, that’s what the blog section is about—opinions of the editors. But I REALLY don’t think Tom was showing any slant here (that’s MY department), just musing about a couple of big-box retailers and how they agree on SOMETHING.
Considerng that Best Buy was the company so scared to offend non-christians that they wouldn’t say Merry Christmas in their strores until Christians finally raised enough hell,
I’m not too impressed with what they might think about this. Wal-Mark would lose a lot of business if they came down on the wrong side of this one, so I can’t say that I’m surprised.
George Bush was called every name in the book during his eight years and I don’t recall anyone getting upset. This is just more of the “Obama can’t be criticized because he’s black” nonsense.
This issue isn’t about whether or not Obama actually is a racist, it’s about whether or not
Beck should be fired for stating his opinion on this. There’s a simple litmus test here; would he have been fired for saying the same thing about George W. Bush?
If the answer is yes, then get rid of him. If it’s no, shut up and quit whining.
OH come on! The mere title of this article suggest a slant. This is not the forum for political debate even though it does PROVE once AGAIN the racial BIAS of the misiah.
Maybe the article should be about who here would actually turn down business from a radical left zealot liberal or a consertive? Time to me honest: YES, I would SURELY walk away from radical liberal business. Call me stupid, but no way could I tolerate the idiocy of listening to customer rant about their love for the mesiah. “Thank you for the opportunity, but I will pass.” No joke, I would DEFINITELY walk away from those dollars. Dont want them. Crazy, not to me.
Beck is right, love him or hate him, just dont be blind or gullible. Couldnt there be a backlash to those retailers who make known their own political bias? Sure could and should be.
I am surprised by the biased slant and how this article even belongs here on CE Pro.
Let Tom post his negative speech and disdain of any conservative on politico.com blogs. When you call someone an idiot you are now becoming the same person that you critisize. Tom LeBlanc is now in the same category as Glenn Beck as a name caller.
I did not know that there was now a law that someone could not critisize our government officials. I guess I overlooked that law that must have went into affect on the last inauguration day.
I did not read Tom’s blog when Keith Olbermann showed images of President Bush with a Hitler mustache. Oh I forgot, he didn’t write one.
Texas, I gotta stand up for my colleague here. Tom does not say Glenn Beck is an idiot. He is merely repeating rhetoric of 2 CE retailers who agree on something.
Give the guy a break. Do you really want to read all day about native resolutions? Just trying to keep it lively.
Slant or no slant, Glenn Beck IS an idiot.
However, at his income level, he’s probably also a good potential CE Pro client. With an ego like his it should be no problem to sell him a massive theater and video server so he can watch himself.
Really, Why all the talk about Glenn Beck, Yes he is over the top BUT. what does he have to do with the housing market that is down 47% from last year…. Can the writer of this Blog show us were either or both Best Buys and Walmart “stated in a press release that Glenn Beck is an idiot ??” I do not think so, Mr. LeBlanc is expressing his own thoughts about Mr. Beck in VERY STRONG language… This is a forum for technologies and home entertainment products. A very long time reader of CEPRO SRB Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Julie, he is saying it in the very title of his blog/statement/CE Pro Article.
We all have political views and most of us try not to offend as many people as Tom has done in this situation.
One thing is for certain, there are millions of people who watch Glenn Beck on nice HDTV sets and record the show on their Tivo. It seems CE Pro has chosen to offend those customers, dealers and installers who frequent this site with such BIASED VIEWS.
I did not know that the American Public should not ever question the wonderful practices of this administration.
Ms. Jacobson; Can you provide information that would show that this blogs author writing has “added any value to CE Pro market”? As senior editor of CE PRO, it would seem a frank discussion with this Blogs author’s job description is in order…. I wonder how many CE Pro reading dealers would be happy (and in turn defend) if one of his/her employees when to the home of a client and started a the conversation with “Fox’s Glenn Beck is an idiot!”... SRB, Ft. Lauderdale. “off my soapbox, now”
If you’re going to criticize someone for posting useless drivel that doesn’t benefit the industry, then bash me instead!

And I could go on…
HND has it correct, when his comments divide the unity of the industry as well as incite a nasty bitter politcal drama to CE Pro.
I think Tom owes the readers an appology for his comments.
Why does Tom choose not to critsize Best Buy for being a key corporate sponsor to the Philadelphia Eagles? Many of us CE Pros are dog owners and it is sick to hear that people are paying to support someone who participates in that.
Just for the future Tom may want to take some wise advice.
“It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt”.
Abraham Lincoln

Why is this on CEpro?
Just because BestBuy is mentioned does not make it relevant political commentary.
Unless you want to start writing about both sides, how about keeping political opinion out of a trade mag.
