Will ‘Avatar’ Spur 3D Home Theater?
The new James Cameron 3D blockbuster "Avatar" is off the a rousing start at the box office, earning $77 million domestically and $242 million worldwide in its first weekend.
And it might just end up being the savior of home theater.
Everything Cameron touches turns to gold, including "Terminator," "Aliens," and of course, "Titanic." So it's only logical to think that Cameron's choice to shoot "Avatar" in 3D will soon be a boon to custom integrators as homeowners decide they will want 3D TVs at home to watch the flick when it comes out on Blu-ray.
The timing of 3D is perfect for dealers, who are looking for "the next big thing" to offer their clients, in the same vein as flat panels, media servers and Blu-ray players came along to offer solid upgrades.
There are only a few 3D Blu-rays available (and those include a Miley Cyrus concert and a Jonas Brothers concert ... what the heck!), but now that the 3D Blu-ray spec has been set, industry veterans tell me there will likely be 100 more 3D movies out in 2010. The best flick on the list is "Journey to the Center of Earth."
If "Avatar" ends up being the "Stars Wars" of this generation, it's only a matter of time before it has a strong spillover effect in the custom market.

I don’t know how much traction this will get. A fun concept but here are some issues I think could hold it up.
1) Content, Always the killer for new tech. Will this be a separate DVD? Combined with standard
2) The glass’s are always an issue. What is the cost? Many people who wear glass’s aren’t going to enjoy wearing this on top of their glass’s.
3) Overall quality of the 3D. How good is it and will they all be as good or will some be “low” quality.
Many questions and once again we’re suppose to go ask clients to purchase new equipment based on a “maybe or we think” it will take off. Sorry not for me to recommend right now to a client. I would rather recommend to my clients to add the use of streaming media, PC and web application use in their home theater and home entertainment system. Much more immediate enjoyment and return on the investment spent by the client.
Love to hear what other integrators think. Sure some clients always want the newest gadget but those are limited.
