Super Bowl Commercials: Top 5 Tech Ads Ever

Some people watch the Super Bowl only for the commercials. We round up the best technology ads that ran during the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, which takes place Sunday, Feb. 5 2012 at 6:30 p.m. (ET), is going to set a record as the most-watched program in television history, according to Media Life's annual pre-Super Bowl poll.

It will be the third straight year that the Super Bowl has set that record. Experts are saying the Super Bowl will draw 113-plus viewers, which would break last year's mark by more than two million viewers.

There are a lot of football fans in this country, but certainly not that many. Some people turn in just to watch the commercials, which will reportedly cost $3.5 million per 30 seconds this time around.

We thought it would be fun to round up the best technology ads that ran during the Super Bowl. Let us know how we did. What is your favorite Super Bowl technology commercial of all-time?

5. Intel - Lunch Room (2010)
It's never fun to hear someone talking smack about you. Not even if you're a robot named Jeffrey.

4. Xerox - Photocopying Monk (1976)
I was a mere twinkle in my father's eye in 1976, but by all accounts, the Xerox 9200 was revolutionary for its speed and accuracy in producing photocopies. Technology sure has come a long way in 36 years.

3. Hulu - Alien Plot (2009)
Starring Alec Baldwin, Hulu's "Alien Plot" video in 2009 promised to turn human brains into "mushymush." The ad was a smash hit, and people have been asking for another installment ever since. Well, apparently, those wishes will be granted as, according to All Things D, Hulu said it will run another spot during the Super Bowl promoting the online video service. Hulu has turned to Twitter to hype the spot, creating hashtag #mushymush for people to tweet about the ad.

Here is the teaser for Hulu's commercial that will debut during Super Bowl XLVI.

2. Google - Parisian Love (2010)
Prior to airing "Parisian Love" in 2010 during the Saints-Colts Super Bowl, Google had a "longstanding opposition to TV and brand advertising," according to the Huffington Post. The video was posted on YouTube three months prior to the Super Bowl, and Google said it never planned on airing it. However, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said after the Super Bowl, "we liked this video so much, and it's had such a positive reaction on YouTube, that we decided to share it with a wider audience."

1. Apple - 1984 (1984)
This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Its only daytime airing was Jan. 22, 1984 during the third quarter of Super Bowl XVIII. It only aired one other time in the U.S., in December 1983 just before 1 a.m. so it could be submitted for an awards ceremony. The estate of George Orwell, author of 1984, considered the commercial to infringe on copyright laws and sent a cease-and-desist letter to Apple in April 1984. It's still considered one of the greatest ads of all-time, and it will be remembered for introducing the world to the Macintosh computer.
