Samsung, Sharp, Hitachi, Epson and three other makers of LCDs have agreed to pay more than $553 million to settle price-fixing claims on TVs, notebook computers and monitors, according to Reuters. According to the article, the settlement (Case: TFT-LCD (Flat Panel) Antitrust Litigation, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 07-md-01827) is based upon lawsuits that claimed the manufacturers conspired to inflate prices and stifle competition between 1999 and 2006. The agreement concludes a five-year investigation by authorities from Japan, Korea, the European Union and the United States. The… View this story

Sharp Elite LED LCD TVs
Grant Clauser | 08/04 09:35 AM, 15 Comments
Sharp has pulled the sheet off its new Elite LCD TVs, a collaboration between Sharp and Pioneer’s Elite brand, mixing the best technology of both brands. There were bowed heads across the videophile world when Pioneer left the TV business a few years ago taking with it the Kuro plasma TVs that many viewers believed were the best flat panels on the market. Ears started twitching earlier this year when Sharp and Pioneer announced that they were going to be working together to launch a new line of Elite TVs.… View this story

Integrators from across the West Coast recently traveled to the DSI Expo in Costa Mesa, Calif., to get a glimpse at the latest innovations in connected TVs. Demos and training from LG, Toshiba, Sony and Mitsubishi showcased 3D cinema and smart TV opportunities for dealers, many of whom came from satellite installation backgrounds. "This is the third year we have done the Expo series. It's important for local integrators who are not part of buying groups to be able to get the education they need," says Meg Berg of DSI… View this story

Not every basement renovation needs to be a house-shaking turnaround. An upgraded flat-panel display, satellite-subwoofer surround sound system and improved décor often suffice. Such was the case in this North Carolina home, in which the basement primarily served as a place for wine storage and little else. The 20-inch CRT television and beanbag chair didn’t exactly invite an evening of music, movie and wine tasting, so the owners thirsted for a more current vintage of fine electronics. Local custom pro Harmony Interiors of Asheville, N.C., came to the rescue on… View this story

Not to put any pressure on a product, but Sharp’s XV-Z17000 DLP projector review was essentially a make-it-or-break-it test for me. I’ve been skeptical about 3D’s relevance for the home, but had not had a chance to view it in my theater as a projection setup. The verdict came quickly when I flipped the switch during Despicable Me (via a Sharp Aquos 3D Blu-ray player) to go from 2D to 3D: this projector “makes it,” so to speak. That’s not to say 3D in the home works for all shapes… View this story

Despite the slight growths in the economy consumers are still approaching many purchasing decisions cautiously. One consumer product category that consumers seem to be less frugal with however is the purchase of a new television. The latest television launched into the market to entice consumers to open their pocketbooks is the new Sharp LC-70LE32U LED LCD TV. The company's new TV is a 70-inch HDTV that is said to offer viewers a screen size that's 62 percent more spacious than a 55-inch TV. The 1080p television incorporates features such as… View this story

Sharp LED LCD TV
Grant Clauser | 04/14 08:25 AM, 2 Comments
We got a peek at it at the CES 2011, now it's here. Sharp's 70-inch LED LCD TV (it's actually 69.5) is now available. According to Sharp, this is the world’s largest LED-based TV, boasting 62 percent more viewing area than a 55-inch TV and equivalent to nine 19-inch TVs tiled together. The LC-70LE732U carries an MSRP of $3,799. Three more models (including a 3D version) in the same size are coming later in 2011. The LC-70LE732U comes with all of Sharp’s most current innovations, including Quattron technology that adds… View this story

Remember those Quad Pixel sets from Sharp we told you about at CES? Well, Sharp says they’re ready and shipping and offered a few more details than previously available. The new TVs cover all four of the LE830 Series AQUOS Quattron LED LCD TV models in 60-, 52-, 46- and 40-inch screen size. All of them are edge-lit LED LCDs using X-Gen LCD panels and Sharp’s Quad Pixel technology, which adds a yellow sub-pixel to the normal triumvirate of red, blue and green. The new models all include built-in WiFi… View this story

When Pioneer left the HDTV market in 2009, a large hole was left in its place. While the company continued to remind people that it was, at heart, an audio brand, its plasma TVs (in particular its Kuro line) had developed a strong reputation as being among the industry's best. Other companies have tried to step into that spot, notably Panasonic, which acquired a lot of Pioneer’s plasma technology. Now it looks like Pioneer Elite is back in the TV game with the help of another display manufacturer, Sharp. Pioneer… View this story
