Black Friday found Bjorn Dybdahl selling as usual in his store, Bjorn's Audio Video, in San Antonio, Texas. Business was brisk at the shop, located just a few minutes away from at least two Best Buy stores. But it was a far cry from the madhouse you usually see at those superstores. Bjorn's doesn't advertise during the busy season because "it's a waste," Dybdahl says. "People are out. They'll come by." On this particular day, boxes were stacked in the store – an anomaly for the specialty shop which is… View this story

Although average spending was down 7.9 percent over the Black Friday weekend, consumers sure were spending on Vizio, according to the company. The Irvine, Calif.-based TV manufacturer says consumers purchased more than 280,000 Vizio HDTVs over the Black Friday weekend, marking a 40 percent increase from Black Friday 2008. Vizio is attributing the increase to features such as "TruLED backlights with Smart Dimming, fast 120/240Hz refresh rates and a full product range from 19" to 55." Other Vizio sales numbers from Black Friday, according to the company: More than 50,000… View this story

While 195 million shoppers, which is up 13 percent from 2008, shopped over the Black Friday weekend, the average spending dropped 7.9 percent to $343.31, according to ShopperTrak. ShopperTrak, a research firm that monitors more than 50,000 stores, says sales on Black Friday rose just 0.5 percent to $10.66 billion. That compared with a 3 percent year-over-year Black Friday increase in 2008 and an 8.3 percent increase in 2007. The National Retail Federation says Americans spent an estimated $41.2 billion over the holiday weekend. Total spending in 2008 was an… View this story

It is one year after I made the fatal mistake of buying a 65-inch Mitsubishi DLP television online -- not that there was anything wrong with the TV or delivery, but my cohorts in the CE business gave me a good tongue lashing. Black Friday is here again and I have revisited the online deals. I found a good one: an HP MediaSmart Windows Home Server with 640 GB hard drive for $200 (free shipping, no tax) from Newegg.com, a savings of $200. Sorry, guys, the online retailer sold out,… View this story

I like Apple, I really do, but for the best bargains, I'm sticking with the less-elegant PC. There are black Friday deals aplenty if you're a PC user: Netbooks in the mid-$100s and peripherals for practically nothing. Plus oh-so-many places to buy. Not so for Mac users. Here is a sampling of some of the hottest black Friday deals that Apple is offering today only. I guess when your fan base is so rabid, you don't have to give away very much. View this story

Electronics shoppers tend to be very happy while driving home with their Black Friday deals. For many, however, the happiness turns to frustration when they get home and realize that the deals didn’t include installation. Some CE pros will get phone calls requesting an already-purchased flat panel to be wall mounted or an inexpensive remote to be programmed. Just for fun, we’ve assembled a complete (more or less) “custom” system compromised entirely of Black Friday deals. We got help from sister site ElectronicHouse.com, which has been chronicling Black Friday ads.… View this story
