Hands On: Pro-Ject Essential USB Turntable

The recent surge in vinyl music has been well documented, so the question for CE pros is how to respond if more clients start asking you to add turntables into audio installations. One really ideal entry point is Pro-Ject’s Essential USB turntable. While Pro-Ject offers a range of higher price points, the Essential is its entry model. MSRP is $299, with the USB version $399, and it comes in white, black and a stunning red such as my review model. As a relative newbie, I did find setup - dealing…

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon turntable
Robert Archer | 03/08 07:09 AM,
In the world of turntables, the European manufacturer Pro-Ject is one of the most recognizable brand names in the entire category. The brand which is imported into the U.S. by the San Francisco-based A/V distribution firm Sumiko has just announced a refresh of arguably its most popular turntable. The newly announced Debut Carbon replaces the company's long-standing Debut III as an affordable turntable solution in its vast analog audio product line and the company says the most significant upgrade to the unit is the addition of a 8.6-inch carbon fiber…

A Turntable for Lefties?

Sometimes at CE Pro we take some artistic liberties to make our magazine look good. In this case, we inverted the image of a turntable to fit the design of our special section on high-end audio. Seemed like a harmless move, right? It was just a tiny portion of the turntable stylus, shown for drama. But a couple of dealers (seriously, only two) called us out on it. This "long-time reader" wrote us with one of the more hilarious comments we've ever received on a CE Pro article. I am…

Shure M97xE phono cartridge
Robert Archer | 11/29 04:49 AM,
For those who haven't visited a music store in a while it may be shocking to see how much real estate that vinyl now occupies as it sits next to CDs and racks of Blu-ray discs. The resurgence of vinyl and turntables has sparked sales in vinyl accessories like Shure's M97xE phono cartridge. The M97xE phono cartridge is an affordable upgrade that allows vinyl lovers to improve the sound of their turntables for short money. Shure says the cartridge features a low-mass, thin-wall aluminum elliptical stylus with a diamond tip.…

Since the advent of the CD in the early 1980s, many audiophiles have complained that the sound doesn’t match that of system that includes a turntable. Then a decade ago, the public adopted another digital audio format: the download. But as music downloads began to explode, more people started to realize and acknowledge that much of it (the majority being compressed files) didn’t sound very good. By 2008, music fans responded to the shortcomings of downloads by purchasing more records. According to industry trends follower PSFK, sales figures for vinyl…

Audio Technica AT-LP240 USB direct drive analog/USB turntable
Robert Archer | 05/04 02:58 AM,
A few years ago the only people that were buying vinyl were old men at yard sales, flea markets and second-hand stores. Today however, vinyl is more fashionable than Kim Kardashian's clothing line. Audio Technica's new AT-LP240-USB is a combination of a traditional analog turntable and a modern audio device with USB connections. Audio Technica says the turntable connects to a computer without having to load device drivers to support the digital transfer of LPs into software as digital files. Internally, the turntable incorporates a direct-drive, high-torque multi-pole motor that's…

Putting aside the relentlessness and loyalty of the old-school audiophile crowd, which never abandoned analog audio, the vinyl category has clearly made a comeback with mass-market consumers. Thorens' new TD 170 EV, which is available from its U.S. distributor WS Distributing provides installers with an all-inclusive product that combines a step-up turntable and a built-in phono preamp that enables installing professionals to integrate the…
