Streaming has certainly become the preferred method of entertainment for many. However, a few new audio and video formats are keeping physical media alive and well. In the past few months, the market has seen several Dolby Atmos-enabled Blu-rays. More recently, a pair of studios announced plans to launch 4K Blu-rays.
That quality is key, because streaming just hasn’t been able to match the experience of discs. However, VUDU certainly wants to try. The streaming service announced plans to offer titles with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.
Initially, VUDU will offer a selection of Warner Bros. titles that have been remastered for Dolby Vision and mixed in Dolby Atmos. Warner Bros. currently has a library of 4K Ultra HD movies, which does have both formats. The lineup includes Mad Max: Fury Road, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Gallows, San Andreas, American Sniper, Man of Steel, Jupiter Ascending, Edge of Tomorrow, and Into the Storm.
VUDU customers will also have access to 4K Ultra HD titles in Dolby Vision only. That collection includes Vacation, Focus, Get Hard, Run All Night, The Lego Movie, The Great Gatsby, Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Hangover trilogy, Magic Mike XXL, and more.
Of course, not everyone will be able to get these goodies right off the bat. VUDU has created a PDF to let users know what equipment they'll need to get Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision through the streaming service. For the Dolby Vision-enabled TV, the company specifically mentions the newly launched VIZIO Reference Series.
“VUDU has always provided customers with the best digital home entertainment experience around,” says Scott Blanksteen, VUDU’s VP of product. “We were at the forefront of high-definition digital video with our HDX format, and now, by offering movies with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, we’re again giving customers the opportunity to be the first to enjoy a premium visual and audio experience.”
To celebrate the launch, VIZIO is offering a free digital copy of Mad Max: Fury Road in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision to customers who purchase a new VIZIO Reference Series TV.
