DIY Doorcams from Remo+ and Panasonic Present Opportunity for Pros
Over-the-door doorcams offer integrators damage-free home surveillance solutions for apartments, dorm rooms, rentals.
It’s easy to disregard DIY smart home products, but sometimes they present opportunities to pursue new markets and potentially beef up your bottom line. When those products happen to be resonating strongly with consumers, they could be worth considering.
Two newcomers to the CEDIA space, Remo+ and Panasonic (with its HomeHawk line) presented popular doorcam products initially designed for the DIY market but may have legs in the professional installation arena.
Both products, the RemoCam and the HomeHawk camera, are wireless and designed to be installed over the door rather than beside the door like most other doorcams and video doorbells on the market.
The RemoCam is particularly easy to install. It hangs from the top of a door much like an over-the-door hook rack.
Its adjustable bracket can fit the width of most doors and can be secured in place with a few screws. The HomeHawk doorcam screws into the top of the door sill.
Why Care About DIY?
So why should an integrator care about something so simple a DIYer could handle the installation? As explained by Remo+, because the doorcams aren’t mounted directly to an exterior wall of a home, they are more accommodating for rentals, apartments, and dorm rooms—any place where certain structural modifications might be prohibited.
Despite the easy installation process, both the Remo+ and HomeHawk doorcam boast impressive monitoring capabilities.
Thanks to its over-the-door design, the Wi-Fi chipset and antenna are housed in the back of the device which is situated inside the home, rather than outside.
This results in optimal connectivity and video transmission. It has a 160-degree field of view, sends push notifications to a user’s smartphone, and delivers 720p HD video. A built-in microphone supports two-way video, and video footage can be recorded to view later.
The HomeHawk KX-HN7000 doorcam can see 172 degrees left to right, and both sills top to bottom.
The HD camera supports two-way audio, can be monitored via a remote app, and is compatible with Google Home and Amazon Echo Show. It can function as a single camera or be combined with 16 peripheral HD camera units.
