The New York-based company URC has one of the most loyal dealer bases in the entire world of custom installation and the company annually ranks among the best in terms of product reliability, dealer support and overall quality. With its entry into the whole-house audio category the company is venturing into a new market that's outside of its core control expertise. Through the launch of products like its new SNP-1 Networked Media Player the company is proving it can deliver products that rival its control solutions. The SNP-1 is a… View this story

Universal Electronics Inc. (Nasdaq: UEIC) is suing URC (formerly Universal Remote Control) for allegedly infringing on at least four patents for remote control technology. UEI is seeking an injunction and monetary damages. In short, UEI claims URC violated patents on a FAVORITE key macro, backlighting on a remote control, selecting IR command sets, and issuing IR macro commands in general. These features are utilized in virtually all higher-end universal remote controls on the market. A judgment in UEI’s favor would disrupt the market for remote-control products from Logitech (Harmony), Crestron,… View this story

The Internet is the bane of URC’s selling team, yet it’s fertile soil for marketers and shoppers. Putting strategies in place to handle the eventual pricing resistance from some prospects is a wise and necessary step (for both manufacturers and integrators). Shoppers spent much more money online in 2011 than in 2010, and that trend will most certainly continue. Numerous sources of data clearly show the sharp rise in purchasing from online sellers; those of us in the trenches all understand this to be a reality. While online shopping continues… View this story

The International Consumer Electronics Show once was a hotbed for home automation, packed with top brands and start-ups alike. These days, though, it’s harder to find automated lights, smart thermostats, and whole-house solutions. If you’re in the market for such technologies, though, here’s where you can find them on the CES 2012 show floor and elsewhere. NextGen Home with Savant, Leviton, Kwikset (LVCC 26100) For years, the NextGen Home stood in the parking lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), promoting such automation systems as Life-Ware (where?) as well… View this story

CEDIA Expo 2011 was two months ago, but the innovations from the event are still fresh. While there were some mind-blowing products like Sony's affordable 4K projector, there were also some more modest developments that signify industry trends: Return of the touchscreens iPad and Android tablets were all over the show floor, as usual, but that doesn’t signify the end of the dedicated touchscreen. Seems they’re actually enjoying a comeback, even in the middle market. Both Control4 and URC introduced new 7-inch touchpanels that look like sleek tablets but act… View this story

Cat Toomey (formerly Cat Fowler), one of the most experienced marketing execs in the custom channel, has joined URC as director of marketing. Before joining URC, Fowler was VP marketing, inside sales and customer service for Elan Home Systems for seven years. And before that, she held similar positions at AMX and Escient. Most recently, she was VP of marketing for ChaCha, the technology firm that provides on-demand answers to random questions from 32 million users per month. While she enjoyed her successful stint at ChaCha, and developed strong skills… View this story

The company formerly known as Universal Remote Control – as in, “We make remote controls” -- showcased its first surround-sound receiver during CEDIA Expo 2011, the 9.2-capable TSP-2000 with 125 Watts per channel. Why bother? Same reason URC bothered with its own whole-house audio system: It fits seamlessly into the Total Control ecosystem, both in integration and programming. “It’s easy to program with URC Accelerator,” says URC’s Peter Pittner, referring to the company’s popular platform for configuring, yes, remote controls. And here’s another reason, according to Pittner: “The TSP-2000 gives… View this story

Just when you thought the dedicated touchscreen was dead, URC is coming out with a new one that looks a lot like an iPad but acts more like a whole-house controller. The manufacturer of home automation and remote control systems had a prototype panel, the TKP-7000, at CEDIA Expo 2011 but wasn’t saying much about it. No ship date, no pricing. But CE Pro did get a look at the beauty and managed to snap some video footage (below). The 7-inch capacitive-touch panel is part of URC’s new Total Control… View this story

There are few companies that can match the experience and expertise that URC brings to the control and automation category, and now with the release of its new iPhone/iPad Total Control app its applying its years research and development (R&D) to a new genre within the control market: Apple iOS-based control. URC's new Total Control iPhone/iPad is engineered to provide users with full control of a URC Total Control system. The N.Y.-based company designed the app to mimic the look and feel of its TKP-2000 In-Wall Two-Way Network Touchscreen, including… View this story
