Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, which takes place Sunday, Feb. 5 2012 at 6:30 p.m. (ET), is going to set a record as the most-watched program in television history, according to Media Life's annual pre-Super Bowl poll. It will be the third straight year that the Super Bowl has set that record. Experts are saying the Super Bowl will draw 113-plus viewers, which would break last year's mark by more than two million viewers. There are a lot of football fans in this… View this story

Social Media Customer Service
Walter Van Norden | 01/31 09:29 AM, 0 Comments
Social media is a significant platform for companies to integrate into their customer service strategy. According to analyst firm Gartner, this trend will continue with at least 35 percent of customer service centers having some form of social media capability by 2013. Companies interested in social media customer support are looking for methods and strategies to follow. A recently released white paper examines how brands, including Apple, Best Buy, Google, Dell, HP, RIM, and DirecTV, are developing dedicated “social care” channels and which methods are most successful. Here's a summary… View this story

The LAPD is dumping Google's Gmail email service, saying it could not meet the security needs of the the police department. Does Gmail's failure to meet security needs bring into question the legitimacy of cloud-based security applications where video surveillance images are recorded and stored offsite, primarily for financial reasons? Google had wooed the LAPD into the system in 2009 promising lower costs and higher security for its 13,000 employees. According to the LA Times, city officials said Gmail "does not have the technical ability to comply with the city's… View this story

When both Google and Microsoft dropped their home energy initiatives earlier this month, many pundits proclaimed the death of home energy management (HEM). For example, in an article that has one of the best titles I’ve ever seen – Home Energy Management: Premature Jocularity – Richard Stuebi of CleantechBlog writes: At best, HEM is an idea before its time, dependent upon smart meters and other so-called “smart grid” technologies to enable a lot of the highest-value functionality of HEM. At worst, HEM is an idea whose time will never come… View this story

On Sept. 16, Google’s free PowerMeter energy monitoring application will be no more. According to Google’s blog, the inability of the company to scale the web-based product has forced it to focus attention elsewhere. "PowerMeter users will have access to the tool until September 16, 2011," Google says. "We have made it easy for you to download your data: simply log in to your account and go to "Account Settings” to export to a CSV (Comma Separated Values) file. We will be contacting users directly with more information on this… View this story

Whenever gas prices go up, consumers think about energy. When they go down, consumers forget about it. The long-term lesson for integrators is to not get caught up in the short-term and think about your long-term energy management strategy. There is no better evidence that energy management is going to be big than to look at what Google has done in the past two months. It has invested a total of $350 million in energy creation projects. It just invested $155 million in two wind farms (one in California, another… View this story

We knew that music was going to the cloud, but we didn't know that Amazon would be the first major provider to offer such a service. On Tuesday, the online retailer launched the Amazon Cloud Drive Player, providing 5GB of free storage (20GB if you buy an album) for music and other content. The service works with PCs, Macs and Android devices. (CORRECTION: Cloud Drive is simply the storage product, which is not unique; Cloud Player is the streaming mechanism for copy-protected music, which is unique among the serious players.)… View this story

Some people have dubbed 2011 as the year of the tablet. Legitimizing this title are products like the newly announced ViewPad 10 from ViewSonic. Launched at the just completed CES Show in Las Vegas, the ViewPad 10 offers users a 10.1-inch screen, Wi-Fi connectivity, dual operating systems that includes a choice of Windows 7 or Google's Android 1.6, an Intel Atom 1.66GHz processor and a 1024x600 LED backlit screen. ViewSonic says that it incorporates dual operating systems to provide users the opportunity to utilize Flash-based programs and Windows programs for… View this story

That giant sucking sound you hear is Google TV pulling out of the Consumer Electronics Show. Apparently, Google has asked Sony, Toshiba, LG, Sharp and possibly other partners to delay the introduction of new TVs incorporating the new Web TV platform. The New York Times reports that Google “caught some of the manufacturers off guard” with the late-hour request: “Google as a company is not a particularly partner-friendly or partner-focused company,” said James L. McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester, who added that because of the delay, it might take another… View this story
