amBX to Launch Wireless DMX Lighting Control at ISE
Julie Jacobson | 01/26 08:37 AM,
0 Comments
Is WDMX the future of wireless lighting controls? amBX is using the platform for a new line of wireless lighting controls to be introduced at Integrated Systems Europe in Amsterdam next week. Last year, we lauded amBX’s entertaining demo of multicolored (RGB) LED lights based on DMX – a popular protocol seen mostly in Europe and in commercial installations, but making inroads into the residential market. The new wireless version of the amBX system taps WDMX, which has “been around for a couple of years and is established in the…

Introduced today at CES 2012, the new HC-800 from Control4 is the company’s most powerful home automation controller yet, and it’s packed with connectors that were lacking in its predecessor, the HC-1000. The 1U piece is “the most powerful processor we’ve ever delivered,” says product manager Kordon Vaughn, ticking off the list of features: on-screen Navigator (Control4 interface) and audio through HDMI, analog and digital outputs to deliver four independent audio zones, two RS-232 ports, six IR ports and more …. “eSATA on the back panel is wicked! says Joey…

Home Automation at CES 2012: Where to Find It
Julie Jacobson | 01/09 11:39 AM,
3 Comments
The International Consumer Electronics Show once was a hotbed for home automation, packed with top brands and start-ups alike. These days, though, it’s harder to find automated lights, smart thermostats, and whole-house solutions. If you’re in the market for such technologies, though, here’s where you can find them on the CES 2012 show floor and elsewhere. NextGen Home with Savant, Leviton, Kwikset (LVCC 26100) For years, the NextGen Home stood in the parking lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), promoting such automation systems as Life-Ware (where?) as well…

4 More People Who Altered the Integration Industry
Julie Jacobson | 12/08 07:42 AM,

Since we just created CE Pro’s Person of the Year in 2011, we missed a few influential characters that have substantially impacted the custom electronics industry in the past couple of years. Had we launched this program two or three years ago, these individuals likely would have topped the list for shaking up the industry. Will West, Eric Smith: Co-founders, Control4 Before Control4 emerged as a force in the industry a few years ago, no other company had seriously challenged the established home automation pack for 20 years. Control4 broke…

Review: ‘Awesome’ New HDMI/Audio Switcher for Control4
Joe Whitaker | 12/02 09:37 AM,

We have been blessed lately with a plethora of HDMI switchers that solve some of the worst deficiencies of HDMI: key limitations, switching lags, EDID support, and so many others. Indeed, I’ve written glowing reviews of some of them. But for the most part they don’t solve a big problem that plagues home entertainment systems in general: pesky IR emitters and RS-232 contraptions on the A/V components themselves. Start-up HydraConnect solves all of these problems with the new HSS-1 HDMI switcher ($9,000), shipping this year (specs below). I discovered this…

JJ’s Takeaways from CEDIA 2011
Julie Jacobson | 11/14 10:18 AM,
2 Comments
CEDIA Expo 2011 was two months ago, but the innovations from the event are still fresh. While there were some mind-blowing products like Sony's affordable 4K projector, there were also some more modest developments that signify industry trends: Return of the touchscreens iPad and Android tablets were all over the show floor, as usual, but that doesn’t signify the end of the dedicated touchscreen. Seems they’re actually enjoying a comeback, even in the middle market. Both Control4 and URC introduced new 7-inch touchpanels that look like sleek tablets but act…

Inside Automated Haunted House
CE Pro Editors | 10/31 10:36 AM,
1 Comment
Enter one of the first rooms on this ghoulish garage tour, and a skeleton jumps out of a shipping crate, a red light glows and a three-headed dog barks and growls. That’s just one of the automated effects set up for Halloween in this three-car garage in a suburb of Seattle. Every October for the past three years, the Griffin and Petrie families have converted their garage into a haunted house, with the shock, scare and awe delivered by a Control4 HC-300 processor. Brett Griffin, who sells Control4 systems for…

Channel Vision 2-Way iPod Dock Now Control4 Certified
CE Pro Editors | 10/26 06:51 AM,
0 Comments
Control4 has added an iPod dock to its roster of certified products. Channel Vision’s ARIA iBus on-wall dock for iPod (model P-3036) passed the rigorous testing process required of all Control4 Certified devices. Channel Vision joins a small but growing list of Control4 Certified manufacturers in the residential market, but appears to be one of the first or only providers of certified iPod docks. The unit communicates two-way via RS-232 to deliver multi-room distribution of iPod music. Users can view metadata (including album art) and control their music collection from…
