08.05.2008 — ZeeVee is now shipping its ZvBox, a media streamer that allows users to watch Internet TV and/or computer content on all the HDTVs in a home.

The ZvBox, which doesn't require a subscription, uses existing coaxial cables to turn the PC monitor output into an HDTV channel called Zv. It then "localcasts" the channel to the HDTVs in the house.

ZvBox also enables viewing of email, Web browsing, photos, music, DVD players and more. It comes with the new wireless ZvRemote.

The ZvBox, originally scheduled to ship in June, will be available from the following companies: Amazon, Best Buy, J&R, NewEgg, TigerDirect and, of course, ZeeVee's online store.

D&H Distribution will manage the distribution and supply chain of the ZvBox. D&H has experienced 18 percent growth this year.

"We are very pleased to partner with one of the country's leading distributors and some of the most prominent e-tailers in the industry," says ZeeVee co-founder and CEO Vic Odryna.

"These partners have a proven track record of successfully bringing the latest innovations to market."

MSRP for the ZvBox is $499.

Only $500? And no subscription? And the reason to get this over AppleTV which costs less and includes a hard drive for storage is exactly what?

This is Brian from ZeeVee. The reason is simple: AppleTV costs less up-front, but if you want it to work at multiple TVs, it costs you more. Also, AppleTV charges you $4-5 for each movie or TV show download, most of which is either already available free on sites such as Hulu or ABC or can be streamed to your computer from UnBox or Netflix for a flat monthly fee. Finally, ZvBox lets you browse the web, check email, and do anything else your computer can do (in fact you can view and launch any app on your computer desktop), and AppleTV cannot. If you are just looking at a cost comparison for let’s say two TVs and content for a year assuming you watch 10 shows or movies per month, AppleTV would cost you over $1000 per year. ZvBox costs you $499 one-time fee, and works on all HDTVs in the home. Over 5 years, that could save you $3,000 and give you way more content/app options that are not possible with AppleTV. The choice is clear.
