World’s Stupidest Criminal Steals iPad at Security Show

If you’re looking for the perfect place to commit a stealth crime, you could do a lot better than ISC West 2011, one of the biggest security trade shows.

I was a first-time attendee and was wowed by the number of surveillance devices on display from traditional cameras to thermal imaging devices and beyond. You really couldn’t walk anywhere without being tracked in some way, even if you didn’t know it was happening.

For some reason, though, a man who entered the hall at the Sands Expo and Convention Center last week, dressed in a Philip Rivers San Diego Chargers T-shirt and using a fake badge, decided to press his luck, despite the presence of cameras up and down every aisle, many of them with overhead capabilities and the ability to zoom in on even the tiniest detail.

He walked up to the Advanced Technology Video booth, looked around to make sure the coast was clear and slipped an unsecured iPad into his bag of freebies. I didn’t see this happen for myself, but word quickly spread around the floor and later a Las Vegas TV station reported on the incident.

You’ve got to see this for yourself. Don’t be surprised if it eventually makes its way to Jay Leno, since he often professes his love of stupid criminals. This guy would surely qualify:

While they certainly caught him on video, did they actually catch him and recover the goods? The story and video say nothing about the suspect’s detention or arrest.

I was thinking the same thing.  I take that to mean no.

I think it is quite safe to say that with a close-up picture, there is a warrant being issues for him any day!

I hope that Advanced Technology Video doesn’t claim to specialize in security. They can’t even protect an iPad in a room full of (their) cameras and people.

This is a great example of how surveillance recording has improved. I recall about 10 years ago a similar incident at the ISC Expo, except it was a team of guys stealing the purses of female booth personnel. Except back then, due to limited storage capacity, the surveillance DVR only recorded individual frames about 5 seconds apart because it was switching between numerous cameras. So it never recorded the actual theft.  Back then, the guys got away with it!

Based on the surveillance video that aired as part of the news story, the gentleman in question was identified by a tipster and arrested by Las Vegas police over the weekend. He now sits in jail, charged with two felonies. The iPad was recovered intact and will be returned.

The criminal was caught and he was taken to Jail where I believe he is still being held without bail…. We “ATV will not be getting the iPad 2 back until he has his time in court. Just because we sell or because anyone has security cameras installed does not mean it is going to stop people from stealing. The security cameras did what it is intended for, we captured the crime and he was apprehended.. 1 more criminal off the streets!

ATV couldn’t buy better media coverage than this. Kudos if they would have “staged” the event.

Hmm, guy gets in to a security show, using a fake badge and then gets past security to enter the show and visits a booth that doesn’t secure their iPad which he walks away with.  Not the brightest criminal on the block but what does this say about the security industry, that allows at least four breaches in security to occur under their own nose?

Security Works.  The video footage produced by Advanced Technology Video helped police identify and obtain the suspect.  He was arrested and now faces a Grand Larceny charge, a felony in the state of Nevada.  Police were also able to recover the stolen device and the suspect now faces 2-5 years in prison for his crime.
