Will You Ever Switch From Component to HDMI?
CE pros report they heavily favor component video over HDMI for a variety of reasons.

07.09.2008 — When we solicited opinions from integrators about their cabling preferences, the vast majority said they favored using Component video over HDMI.

It's not surprising, as HDMI has become one of the biggest hot buttons for integrators looking to offer their clients a quality, but fool-proof, installation.

The criticisms against HDMI seem to involve seven points:

- Standards (HDMI 1.2, 1.3, standard vs. high-speed, etc.)
- The HDCP handshake causing connectivity problems
- Difficulty with long-runs of cabling
- Inability to terminate in the field/make custom lengths
- Distribution problems
- Cost is too expensive
- Arguably no difference in picture quality

When we proposed 3 Ways to Improve HDMI, many of you chimed in with your own thoughts and experiences on what the standard needs to survive.

But we want to know: will you ever switch from component to HDMI?

What needs to happen in order for you to switch? Or is HDMI's future already set, and you're sticking with component until the end?

Let us know what you think in the comments.

Yes! Solve the 7 problems mentioned and we will!

The picture quality issue is not true: IT IS BETTER. But most of the clients DOES NOT SEE the difference. They pretend, the invent, they see diference if we tell them that the diference is there.

I did a Blind TEST Component x HDMI in the store. 90% did not see any diference before explanation.

But one topic is true: for PROJECTORS the diference is more noticiable due to cable loss ( digital transmition ).

HDCP should die. People rip DVD, they dont record it on VCR or table DVD anymore!

We will not use HDMI on video source equipment. 1080p is not yet important enough to justify loss of picture to a client.
When the HDMI spec includes a LOCKING connector that the weight of the cable will not allow for the connector to come loose from the equipment, MAYBE we will start using HDMI cables on source equipment.
We will use HDMI from a scaler/video processor to a display device. Giving the diplay the best possible resolution, and an artifact free image is important.

I’d think twice about installing analog equipment:

You might get a lot of nasty phone calls in 2012.
