Takeover Job Rids Client of 60 Useless Remotes

This massive takeover job may have been daunting, but the payoff after replacing a sprawling disjointed system with Control4 was surreal.

Liquid Sound fix this mess of an installation, replacing dozens of disjointed mini systems with a Control4 system with 13 touchscreens that controls 26 zones of audio, 11 LCD screens, two home theaters, 28 audio and video sources, a 32-camera surveillance system and two motorized LCD lifts.

Would you be nervous about taking over a project featuring a 4,466-square-foot house plus 4,000 square feet of outdoor recreation space, a 2,293-square foot stable with audio and a 2,100-square foot guest suite - all of which is chopped into different zones with independent systems?

The guys at Vancouver-based Liquid Sound were up for the challenge. It paid off because not only did they manage to centralize everything with Control4 automation, but they had the surreal experience of handing the owner a bag of 60 remote controls he no longer needed.

The previous installers had wired the house such that the system wasn't tied together and each room required multiple remotes for accessing audio, video and such, explains Liquid Sound owner Daniel Mendes. He sent his team to re-wire the house and create a comprehensive system that allows the client to share all the audio/video sources throughout while keeping the equipment in one area.

Instead of dozens of mini systems, the client now has a fully integrated Control4 system with 13 touchscreens. "We are able to control 26 zones of audio, 11 LCD screens, two home theaters, 28 audio and video sources, a 32-camera surveillance system and two motorized LCD lifts," Mendes says.

The $260,000 system includes $60,000 of Control4 equipment, making it Liquid Sound's largest Control4 project. The greatest challenge, Mendes says, "was to install a system that is suitable for a family of five with each member having their own unique tastes of music, and having the ability to select their favorite songs from any audio zone in the house."

The client is pretty excited about how the installation turned out and being able to access, for instance, an iPod that is docked in bedroom from 400 feet away in the outdoor living space. What left the biggest impression, though, was that giant bag of now-useless remotes.

Mendes asked the client to comment on the system, and he relays this response: "Look at all those remotes in one bag! Glad we don't have to touch them!"
